Biography

Jewell Daisy Garroutte, the daughter of Monroe Garroutte and Bessie Guinn, was born 22 May 1913 in Tahlequah, Cherokee County, Oklahoma and she passed away 30 September 1994 in Muskogee, Muskogee, Oklahoma.^[1] She is buried in the Greenwood Cemetery, Porter, Wagoner County, Oklahoma.^[2]

In the 1920 U.S. Federal Census for Peggs, Cherokee County, Oklahoma, Jewel's family is listed as:

• Monroe Garroutte, a farmer age 36 from Arkansas,
• Bessie Garroutte, wife age 32 from Oklahoma,
• Robert A., son age 14 from Oklahoma,
• Homer, son age 13 from Oklahoma,
• Jerry J., son age 11 from Oklahoma,
• Bruce, son age eight from Oklahoma,
• Jewel, daughter age six from Oklahoma,
• Edwin, son age four from Oklahoma, and

• Jewel Garroutte age 11 born 22 May 1914,
• Edwin Garroutte age ten born 22 February 1915, and
• Myrtle Garroutte age seven born 11 April 1918.

Monroe H. Garroutte, Parent or Guardian, swore that the above information was correct on 19 January 1925.^[4]

Miss Jewel Garroutte age 15 and Claude Cason age 21, both of Porter, Waggoner County, Oklahoma were united in marriage 16 January 1929 in Muskogee, Muskogee County, Oklahoma. Her father, M.H. Garroutte, gave his consent to the marriage on 16 January 1929 and their marriage was witnessed by M.H. Garroutte and W.O. Cason.^[5]

The 1940 U.S. Federal Census, Porter, Wagoner County, Oklahoma shows the family as:

• Claude Cason, a farmer age 32,
• Jewel Cason, wife age 26,
• William M., son age ten,
• J.C., son age eight,
• Robert C., son age seven,
• Ralph D., son age five,
• Paul A., son age three, and
• James E., son age one.^[6]

Mrs. Jewel Garroutte age 31 and William McCurtain age 41, both of McAlester, Pittsburg County, Oklahoma, were united in marriage on 10 November 1944 at McAlester. The marriage was performed by Fred W. Goddard, Officer in Charge, of the Salvation Army.^[7]

In the 1950 U.S. Federal Census for McAlester, Oklahoma the couple are listed as:

• Jewel McCurtain, wife.

No other information is given about Jewel and her name has been crossed through.^[8]

The Marriage License between Garroutte and McCurtain is indexed incorrectly as: William Mccurtain and Jewel Garrantte. I attempted to edit their last names to match the license; however, the Family Search website was unable to 'save' my corrections. Maybe a relative can attempt this at a later date. Younge-80 22:56, 13 April 2023 (UTC) From the last source listed above, it appears Jewell was married to a Mr. Nelson and a Mr. Chase; however, I was unable to find marriage certificates to support this.
