Biography

Sarah (Sallie) Garwood was born May 14, 1815[1] the presumed daughter of James Garwood and Sarah (Sallie) Frost.

Sarah married Conrad Hendrix on Feb 14, 1841 in Davie County, North Carolina.[2] [3] He was the son of Anderson Hendrix and Margaret “Peggy” Myers. [4]

Sarah and Conrad had the following children:

1. Amy Hendrix Jan. 5, 1842 - Feb. 16, 1918 (married Zerrell Isaiah Minor)

2. Mary Ann Hendrix Jun. 6, 1843 – Aug. 27, 1883 (married Henry Clay Foster)

3. Nathaniel A. Hendrix Oct. 19, 1844 – Nov. 11, 1898 (married 1. Rebecca Clark 2. Ellen T. Foster 3. Mary J. Garwood.

4. Giles Hendrix Sept. 16, 1845 - Mar. 19, 1919 (married Mary E. Green)

9. Hannah Hendrix Oct. 26, 1856 - Aug. 27, 1888 (married Hiram Mitchell Foster)

Some family trees have listed child # 5 Sarah Elizabeth (child of Conrad and Sarah Garwood) as 2 different children, a Sarah and an Elizabeth. When you look closely at the census records you will see that one child is once called Sarah and in another census is referred to as Elizabeth but their age suggests this is the same child. Some have her birth date as 1843 which is on her headstone but the census records showing the order and ages of the kids suggests she was born in 1848.

In the 1850 census,[5] 1860 census,[6] and 1870 census,[7] Sarah Garwood Hendrix is living with her husband Conrad along with their children Amy, Mary Ann, Nathaniel, Giles, Sarah Elizabeth, Samuel, Martha, George, and Hannah in Davie County, North Carolina.

By the 1880 census Sarah and Conrad, are living in the same place in Davie County, North Carolina with only one of their children Sarah Elizabeth.[8] By this time the other children had married and were living on their own.

Sarah’s husband Conrad died,[9] without a will, on Feb. 22, 1884. His son Nathaniel Hendrix became administrator of his estate.[10] The estate was not settled until 1888 after the death of Sarah Garwood Hendrix. The lands of Conrad and Sarah Hendrix were divided among their heirs accordingly: [11]
