Biography

Annie Mabel Gascoyne was born in Beckenham, Kent towards the end of 1873,[1] and baptised on 20 July 1874 in Lillington, Warwickshire.[2] She was the second child and only daughter of James Gascoyne and Annie Tattersfield.[2]

In 1881 at the age of seven she was living with her parents, her two brothers, and a servant, in her native town of Beckenham.[3]

In 1891 she was living with her mother, her two brothers, and a lodger, at The Manse, 1 Mill Street, Royal Leamington Spa.[4] Annie Mabel, now 17, was described as a 'Teacher of Dancing',[4] and her mother as a 'SchoolMistress'.[4] Her mother was the Head of the household,[4] her father having exiled himself by emigrating to Australia in 1882.[5]

In 1901 her two brothers had moved on, but she was still living in Leamington with her mother, now at 18 Russell Terrace.[6]

At the time of the 1911 census she and her mother were still living together in Leamington, Warwickshire and still occupied as teachers.[7]

Research Notes

  1. In 1882 her father James left the family to emigrate to Australia, probably to escape his creditors, where he died in 1897.
  2. Some time during the mid 1880s her mother moved the family back to Leamington Spa, where her maternal grandparents lived, and where her mother started a small school in an effort to provide for the family.
  3. Neither Annie Mabel or her mother have been located in the 1921 census.
  4. A Mabel Gascoigne appears in the 3rd class passenger list of SS Savonia departing 21 May 1921 for Halifax, Nova Scotia, as part of a group of passengers all giving their last address in England as 'c/o The Salvation Army, Queen Victoria Street'. Conceivably this might be the Annie Mabel Gascoyne of this profile, which would explain her absence from the 1921 Census.
