Biography

Joseph was born in 1748, East Haddam, CT, baptized 14 Feb 1748, Millington, CT, the son of Daniel Gates & Lydia Fuller. He married Jane Brockway of Lyme 13 Aug 1772. According to Birth Records of East Haddam, Joseph and Jane were parents of 9 children, the first two of whom (Lucanda & Eliphaz) died while young. They then had Lucanda (again) 1776, Joseph 1778, Lydia 1780, William 1782, Nathan Saxton 1884, Hannah 1886, and Eliphaz (again) 1788. Another daughter, Beulah was b. 1789, whose birth is not found in East Haddam Records.

Beginning about 1800, most members of this family began migrating to Oneida County, NY. Jane Brockway is said to have d. in CT, but a wife (presumably his second and unknown) is found with Joseph II in Federal Census Records of 1820 and 1830 in Westmoreland, Oneida, NY. Joseph is said to have died about 1840 at age 92, and he is not found in the 1840 census. His son Nathan has returned to Oneida in 1840 and lives next to William, where Joseph II previously lived. No records of daughters Lucanda and Lydia have been found.

The 1820 census records are instructive for Joseph and his four sons and two younger daughters. All now live in central NY, near the western end of the Mohawk River Valley. In Westmoreland, Oneida Co. an older Joseph is found, immediately followed by William and a younger Joseph. The entries are consistent for Joseph II and a somewhat younger wife, son William with a wife and children, and son Joseph with his wife Dulcena Stewart and young family. The two younger sons are nearby; Nathan in Whitestown, and Eliphaz in Mexico, both m. with young families. Daughter Hannah is married with a family living in Mexico, and daughter Beulah, recently married lives just a few houses away from Nathan in Whitestown. The younger Joseph was likely the first to migrate from East Haddam, CT for he m. Dulcena in @ 1804 in Oneida Co. NY. and they appear with two young children in the 1810 census. Nathan was likely the last of the family to migrate, in 1816 / 17 according to family records, and he appears in 1810 East Haddam CT census. I have been able to "flesh out" the families of sons Joseph, Nathan S. and Eliphaz, and of daughters Hannah and Beulah, but know very little about William and his family. He appears next to a family member in 1820, 1830, and 1840 Federal Census Records in Westmoreland, was married and had children, but I've found nothing more.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:
