Biography

Henry Gatewood was born in Old Rappahannock County, Virginia about 1692. He is named in the wills[1][2] of his father and mother. Henry married Dorothy Dudley in Essex County before 12 August 1714 when she released her dower rights in a deed to Thomas Bell.

The will[3] of his father-in-law, Richard Dudley, names daughters Elizabeth and Dorothy Gatewood and Henry and Thomas Gatewood were paid from the estate[4] of Richard Dudley.

Henry was later a land owner and slave holder in Essex and Spotsylvania Counties, Virginia. He moved[5] to King and Queen County during the 1730s but nothing of his life there is known due to the complete loss of records in that county before the Civil War.

He moved to Spotsylvania County in 1742 and remained in that county for the rest of his life.

His wife, Dorothy, died and he next married Tabitha Collins, widow of Edmund Foster, about 1751. No children from this marriage have been identified.

Henry Gatewood died testate in Spotsylvania County and his Will of January 21, 1771[6] was proved on 18 September 1777 and in inventory[7] of his estate was returned on 7 November 1777.

Henry did not marry Elizabeth, he married her sister, Dorothy. Elizabeth married Henry's brother, Thomas.

Because I have several Gatewood matches on FTDNA I ran through the above listings on GEDmatch and found a match with GEDMatch A931011 Lenny Darnall on Chr 17, however, I had no match for the others. Should I say Howdy cousin or is this a flook? Connie GEDmatch T402351
