Marie Gaudet was born about 1633 in France, daughter of Jean Gaudet (abt. 1575–bef. 1678) and Unknown (Inconnu) Gaudet (abt. 1600– ).[1] Shortly after Marie married Étienne Hébert, her father remarried (to Nicole Colleson) and her youngest sibling was born about the time of her third child.

Note: While Marie's potential place of birth in France had been suggested to be Martaizé (which was near Loudun in Poitou), no corresponding source documents or citations have been identified, her parents are considered unknown, and neither White DGFA nor any other reference cited appears to identify her birth as being at Martaizé. Without further information or a source being identified, her birth is noted as being in France with the particular locality being unknown.

Marie (16) married Étienne Hébert (20) (born about 1629 in France; son of Unknown Hébert) in 1650 in Port-Royal, Acadie, Nouvelle-France.[1] Their known children were:[1]

  1. Marie Hebert (abt. 1651–abt. 1677) .
  2. Marguerite (Hebert) Hébert (abt. 1652–aft. 1715) .
  3. Emmanuel Hebert (abt. 1653–1744) .
  4. Éstienne Hebert (abt. 1654–1713) .
  5. Jean Hebert (abt. 1659–abt. 1744) .
  6. Françoise Hebert (abt. 1661–1713) .
  7. Catherine Hebert (1662–1727) .
  8. Martine Hébert (bef. 1665– ) .
  9. Michel Hebert (1666–1736) .
  10. Antoine Hébert (abt. 1670–bef. 1753)

According to depositions from their descendants, Marie came from France with her husband.[2]

When Etienne died between 1669 and 1671,[1][3]Marie (42) married Dominique Gareau (49) (born in 1626 in France) in 1676 in Port-Royal, Acadie. Their known daughter was Marie Gareau (abt. 1677–abt. 1755).[4][5]

In 1686, at Port Royal, Marie GODET [sic]was living with her second husband, Dominique GARAULT [sic], aged 60, and their daughter, Elarie [recte Marie] Garault [sic], aged 9, and her two sons: Michel, aged 20, and Antoine, aged 16. Her two sons were children she had with her first husband, Emanuel [recte Etienne] HEBERT. The family lived on 3 arpents of cultivable land with 4 sheep and 4 hogs.[6]

She was widowed again between 1686[6] and 1698[7]

Marie Godet, wife of Hebert was buried at Port Royal on July 30 1710, aged about 80 years.[8][9]

DNA. The Mothers of Acadia Maternal DNA project is conducting ongoing research to verify their origins. As of 2015, Stephen White reported that Marie Gaudet had a J1b2 haplogroup.[10] Numerous descendants have consistently reported a J haplogroup with 5 of those doing full testing to J1b2 , with many descendants of her sister Francoise Gaudet who have also reported a J haplogroup with 5 of those doing full testing to J1b2.[11]. J haplogroups indicate European origins.

Please note that all of the census and death information, with one exception that shows her born in 1638, gives her birth year as 1630 to 1633. There is no original source that I've found that gives her birth as early as 1626. I'd love to know where this comes from. I'm not making the change in her profile but hope that someone in the Acadian project does.

Thanks for noticing this, Roberta, and for letting us know. The estimated year of birth given by Stephen White in the DGFA is 1633, which corresponds to her age in the 1671 census (38), the one closest to her birth. The wrong date was perhaps inadvertently added during a merge. It is now corrected. We always appreciate your adding links to your excellent articles in DNAeXplained – Genetic Genealogy.

Thank you Fletcher. That DNA source was on the profile, but I reformatted the DNA paragraph to make it more clear. Cindy

Gaudet-751 and Gaudet-7 are not ready to be merged because: I am not certain these two women are the same person. Although both have marriage to Etienne Hebert in common, and both were born in or near Martaize, France, Gaudet-751 is relying on Ancestry.com trees. Also the birth and death years for each vary considerably. I would prefer that someone with expertise in Gaudet genealogical research look into this proposal for merging.

I removed Antoine Babin as a spouse. There is no mention of her having married a man with that name in the bio and no source provided.

Gaudet-751 and Gaudet-7 appear to represent the same person because: same name, spouse similar dates.

Gaudet-751 and Gaudet-7 are not ready to be merged because: Not enough information on Gaudet-751; also an additional spouse.
