Biography

William Gaylard was born before 1546, when his father died.

He was mentioned in both the May 4, 1567 will of his step-father Giles Alvyn,[1] and the August 29, 1572 will of his mother Joan Alvyn.[2] He had:

  1. Elizabeth, b. bef. 1567[1][2]
  2. Mary, b. bef. 1567[1][2]

Research Notes

Some secondary sources give his death as July 9, 1614 at Pitminster. There is no record of a William dying there then, however Edmond Gaylard was buried June 9, 1614 at Pitminster.

There is no record of William Gaylard or his family in the parish register at Pitminster. He is also not mentioned in the compotus rolls for Tauton Manor when his siblings were. He was alive in 1572, as he is mentioned in the will of his mother.

His daughters, Mary and Elizabeth, were born by 1567, and were mentioned in both Giles Alvyn's and Joan's wills. It happens that in the neighbouring parish of Trull, there are two records for Gaylards:

  • "Ao Dm 1561... The xij Day of July Elsbeth gaylerde was babtised the Dother of Wyllya[m] gaylerd"[3]
  • "Ao Dm 1563... [ink blot]arr gaylerd the dothr of Wyllya[m] gaylerd was baptised the firste daye of September"[4]

The first record is indexed on Ancestry (December 2020) as "Robert", however the actual record reads "Elsbeth". The second name is ambiguous, and could be "Harr[y]" if it were a son baptized, but the record states that it was a "dothr".

Gaylord-124 and Gaylord-103 appear to represent the same person because: There is only one Nicholas Gaylard - there is no evidence of a Nicholas son of Nicholas Gaylard. As such, Gaylord-124 is supposed to represent the same individual as Gaylord-103. See Nicholas' profile (Gaylord-95) for more information.

The merged profile should use the data from Gaylord-103.
