Biography

"Martha was born in 1844. daughter of William & Ann Markham Gee. Martha came to Canada with her parents on the ship Westminster when she was only two years old in 1847. She married Nathan Sweet in 1871. Her sister Elizabeth married Nathans brother Sheldon.

Nathan and Martha had eight children. Herbert and George, died at the age of three months and George five years, only six days a part.

Nathan was a harness maker by trade. They lived fairly well, not rich, nor poor either. On the evening of March 8, 1892, he came home after work with a very bad cold. He went to bed without eating his evening meal. During the night he died of pneumonia. His oldest child was 20 years old, his youngest was 5. He had six living children at the time of his death.

After her children had grown to adulthood, and had either married or left home, except for the youngest two girls, Martha gave up her house. She went to California with the two girls to visit the oldest son Will. Then Martha went to live with her son Nathan in Ketchikan, Alaska. He never married and Martha kept house for him until she died. They also lived in Prince Rupert, and at the time of her death they lived in Vancouver." - Geneology.com (Pearl Sweet)
