Biography

Private Jonas Geer served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: May 19, 1964
Mustered out: Sep 8, 1964
Side: USA
Jonas Geer was an early pioneer in Ohio.

Jonas Geer was born in 1821 in Springfield Township, Gallia, Ohio, United States. His parents were Earl Piercy Geer (1783-1831) and Sibyl (Fischer) Geer (1785-1844). He was the seventh child out of eight.[1]

Jonas is a descendant of George Geer (abt.1633-1726) who migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Antebellum

On 29 Nov 1840 in Wilkesville Township, Gallia, Ohio, United States, Jonas married Sarah (Holcomb) Geer) (born in Aug 1820 in Gallia, Ohio, United States).[2]

It is not surprising that Jonas was a farmer. By 1850, 87 percent of the population in Ohio was farming. Ohio was the "breadbasket" of the nation and the leading state in the production of corn, wheat, and wool. There were 2,000 gristmills to grind the wheat into flour. It was considered the best-quality flour in the nation and commanded a higher price than flour from other states.[3]

The knowledge of how to make a gristmill was handed down from his grandfather, also named Jonas. His grandfather left Preston, New London, and Connecticut and became one of the first settlers in Canton, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, United States, in 1796. There, his grandfather cleared a few acres, built a log house, and started to build a gristmill. Four years later, he sold out and moved to Ohio, the United States.[4]

In the 1850 census, Jonas, aged 28, was in Eagle Township, Vinton, Ohio, United States. On the county map, you can see where Eagle Township is located in Vinton County. Also shown is where his father was buried in the Geer Cemetery in Wilkesville. In the ten years since they were married, Jonah and Sarah, aged 29, had 7 children: Benjamin, aged 9, Alvin, aged 7, Sybil, aged 5, Nancy, aged 3, Alpardy (Earl Paris), aged 2, and the newly born Betsy.[5][1]

Vinton County
Ohio Counties

In the 1860 census, Jonas, aged 38, a farmer, was in Paint, Fayette, Ohio. Fayette County is 2 counties west of Vinton. Jonas and Sarah, aged 39, were still growing their family, which included eleven children, with twins being the youngest: Benj (Benjamin), a laborer, aged 18, Alvin, aged 17, Cind (Sybil), aged 15, Nancy, aged 13, Earl P. (Earl Paris), aged 12, Betsey (Betsey), aged 11, Arminias, aged 9, Polly L., aged 7, Eliza, aged 4, Wm L. (William Lafayette), aged 1, and G. W. (George W.), aged 1. Noteworthy is that the family changed the spelling of their last name to Gear in this census. It is unclear if this was intentional or just how the census taker spelled it. [6][1]

Civil War

On 27 Jun 1863, in Paint, Ohio, Jonas, aged 43, registered for the draft. Jonas was a private in Company D of the 168th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry.[7][8] In the Civil War, Ohio provided the federal government with 260 regiments. These included infantry, artillery, and cavalry units.

The infantry regiments served for varying lengths of time, from one hundred days to three years. In 1864, the governors of several northern states believed that these militia men could free up regular soldiers who were in forts or guarding important sites. The governors convinced the federal authorities that this surge of men, known as "Hundred Days' Men", would allow the North to defeat the South in one hundred days or less.[9]

The 168th was to be part of the Hundred Days' regiments.[9]Jonas enlisted on 2 May 1864.[10] The 168th Ohio Infantry was organized at Camp Dennison near Cincinnati, Ohio, and mustered on 19 May 1864, for 100 days of service under the command of Colonel Conrad Garis.[11]

The regiment left Ohio for Covington, Kentucky, on 19 May 1864. Detachments were stationed at Falmouth, Kentucky, and Cynthiana, Kentucky, guarding railroad lines and bridges. The regiment participated in operations against John Hunt Morgan May 31-June 20. They had action at Cynthiana on June 9th, and the detachment was captured. They were in Cynthiana on June 11. They had duty in Kentucky until July 10. They moved back to Camp Dennison on July 11. They performed guard duty there and in Cincinnati until September 8.[11]

The 168th Ohio Infantry mustered out of service on September 8, 1864, in Cincinnati.[10] The regiment lost 19 enlisted men during service: 11 men were killed or mortally wounded, and 8 men died of disease.[11]

The Ohio Volunteer Infantry played an important role in the Civil War. A picture of the 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, in Gettysburg on 3 Jul 1863, attacking the left flank of Davis' Brigade of Pettigrew/Trimble's Division, Army of the Northern Virginia, is here. The picture below shows what the soldiers looked like.

Postbellum

In the 1870 census, Jonas, aged 50 and a farmer, was in Salem, Daviess, Missouri. Jonas and Sarah (51) had two more children since the last census, bringing the final total to 13 children. Some of the older children had already left the "nest". The children at home in 1870 were: Mary E. (Polly L.), aged 18, Alice (Eliza), aged 14, George, aged 13, William, aged 13, Almira, aged 9, and Sarah E., aged 8.[12]

Historic Ohio Farm

Daviess County is in the northwest of Missouri and had a large influx of residents when the railroad went through it.[13]Just before the 1870 census, the first confirmed bank robbery involving Jesse James occurred on December 7, 1869, at the Daviess County Savings Association in Gallatin. On July 15, 1881, the gang was believed to have been responsible for the robbery of the Rock Island Line at Winston, in which a conductor and passenger were killed. After Jesse James was murdered in St. Joseph, Frank James surrendered in 1882. James was found not guilty because the jury was filled with Southern sympathizers who refused to convict one of their own.[14]

In the 1875 census, Jonas, aged 55, was in McPherson, Kansas, United States. He was living with his wife, Sarah, aged 56, and five of their children: Arminias, aged 24, George, aged 17, William, aged 17, Almira, aged 14, and Sarah Ellen, aged 13.[15]

In the 1880 census, Jonas, aged 60 and a farmer, was the married head of household in Lone Tree, McPherson, Kansas, United States. Jonas had a crippled knee, and Sarah, aged 61, suffered from rheumatism. McPherson is located in the middle of Kansas. Only 2 children were still at home: William, aged 21, and Ella (Sarah Ellen), aged 17.[16]

In the 1889 census, Jonas, aged 68, was the married head of household in Whatcom, Washington, United States. Sarah, aged 69, was the only one left living with him. Whatcom would be their last residence in a lifetime of constant relocating, always looking for greener pastures. Whatcom County is as far west and as far north as you can go without going into Canada. This was the end of their long journey.[17]

Death

Jonas, aged 76, son of Harrold Geer and Sibyl Fisher, died from heart disease on October 3, 1896, in Bellingham, Whatcom, Washington, United States.[18]

Burial

Jonas was in a military record: U.S. headstone provided for deceased Union Civil War veteran Jonas Geer; Date of Death: October 3, 1896; Burial Place: Bayview Cemetery, Bellingham, Whatcom County, Washington, United States; Rank: Private; Regiment: 168th; Company: D; Unit: Ohio Infantry. In 1880, Jonas, as an invalid, filed for a Civil War pension, and on October 19, 1896, his wife filed as a widow.[19][8] [20] [21]

Children

Together, Jonas and Sarah had 13 children (6 sons and 7 daughters):

  1. Benjamin Geer (abt.1841-)[22]
  2. Alvin Benjamin Geer (1842-1917)[23]
  3. Isabell Sybil (Geer) Huff (1844–1923).[24]

Research Notes

Wilkesville was named a town on 10 Jun 1810. It was part of Gallia County until 1850, when Vinton County was established as Ohio's 82nd County and took Wilkesville from Gallia County.[35]VINTON was created from ATHENS, GALLIA, HOCKING, JACKSON, and ROSS.[36]
