Biography

In 1914, Walter Geer stated that the immediate English ancestor of the New England immigrants George Geer and Thomas Geer was a Jonathan Geere of Heavitree, Devon.[1] In 1923, he went further and made Jonathan a son of George Geere of Kenn, Devon.[2] At the time, Walter Geere said he had no actual evidence in the way of baptisms or wills to connect the immigrants to Jonathan Geere. George Geere does appear in the Visitations of Devon, however, he is given no children.[3][4][5]
In fact, since the publishing of The Geere Genealogy no evidence of any kind has been found to suggest that Jonathan Geere even existed. There are no baptism records, no probate records, no court records, no land records, etc. which record the name Jonathan Geere in Heavitree. And certainly no evidence that a Jonathan Geere had sons George and Thomas.
Whether intentional or unintentional, this would appear to be a case of genealogical fraud. It is an attempt to connect New England immigrants of unknown origins to an armigerous family in England which appears in the Visitations. The name George is pervasive in the Geere family of Devon, and so it is still very possible that the immigrants do belong to this family. However, the exact connection remains unknown and certainly unproven.

Birth

Born: About 1580.
The date is not based on any record. It is a guess based on the belief that his supposed father was born about 1552, and that his supposed son was born in 1621.

Death

Died: Before 1635.
The date is not based on any record. It is following the family legend which says his supposed sons George and Thomas Geer were orphans when they immigrated to New England in 1635.

Note

Note: Jonathan supposedly left two sons, George and Thomas, under the guardianship of an uncle, so presumably died after his wife. The uncle appears to have wanted them out of the way in order to gain their inheritances, so shipped them to America. Thomas finally settled at Enfield in 1682 and George was one of the first settlers at New London about 1651.

First, the birth date of the attached research sheet (this is not a record) is for Jonathan Geer the son of George Geer. The profile and discussion are regarding the father of George who is theorized to have been a Jonathan Geere.

I'm reviewing Walter Geere's book today, but in the preface he states that the first part of the book is from the a Geere family member who was in possession of the family documents as he resided on George's homestead. Walter acknowledges that the Exeter records only date back to 1653 and that no documents for the young men or their father have been found.

Here's where I'm at in my research, the men were brothers (George and Thomas), there is evidence to support this. There are no baptismal records of them in Heavitree, Exeter, Devonshire, England. No Geere/Gear/Geer families. I just checked this.

George passing down the name of his father is reasonable, he named his eldest son John, so based on naming practices, I'd say yes I expect his father to be John. The orphan story is probably true and the men were sent as servants/apprentices. The apprenticeship is evidenced in the colony records and the later dates of their first marriages. Perhaps even the story of the letter could be true, though I have yet to find evidence to support - the boys probably didn't want to servants and may not have wanted to leave.

The theory that the uncle was Dennis Gear (which I was warming up to) I disproved this weekend. Dennis Gear was of Ovingdean, Sussex, England (a very different location than Heavitree) and his father was Thomas Geare. Dynnes had a sister Jone. Dynnes' marriage, baptism of his two daughters are in the Ovingdean, Sussex records. Also a burial record for Dynnes' father. The names of the Gears in that parish do not match to George and Thomas Geare immigrants we are researching. I also checked the records of nearby Kingston, Sussex for the men. AND when I mean search, I mean page by page.

I have also searched Brighton Devonshire and that is also a 'no go'.

I will check the 'Kenn' reference and other attached records. I do need to state though that perhaps someone found estate information in Devonshire around this family. BUT if the men were left an estate, you'd think by now evidence of that connection would have been sourced and shared.
