Nicholas Gentry was born in about 1740 in Louisa County, Virginia, the son of Nicolas Gentry and Mary Brooks.[1][2]
He married Elizabeth P. Gibson before 1765. The couple had at least six children over the next 20 years.[2]
He was killed "in defense of the fort"[3] in early 1783 at Fort Nashborough, Washington County, North Carolina (present day Nashville, Tennessee)[2] in combat with native Americans, likely Creeks[2] or Cherokees after the killing of Chief Untoola in May 1783.[4]
Nicolas died at Fort Nashborough,[5] the predecessor of Nashville, Tennessee. However, at the time of his death, this location might be acurately referenced as either:
Nicolas's date of death is inferred as early 1783.[2] Based on this analysis, the best option is to assume that the location given for Fort Nashborough at the time of his death should be based on death before 6 Oct 1783, resulting in:
As Fort Nashborough has already been established as a valid location by FamilySearch, the WikiTree gold standard, it's appropriate to use in the Death Place name. Unfortunately, FamilySearch doesn't differentiate between the time over the following progression:
Fort Nashborough as a recognized location never existed in Tennessee, only in North Carolina. As a result, the Death Location has been updated to "Fort Nashborough, Washington County, North Carolina, United States" and a request will be made to FamilySearch to recognize the following, removing reference to Tennessee:
There remains on credible source that requires more research that places the date of death in 1782 - the DAR records.[3] A direct review of the State Records of North Carolina, Vol. IXX, pp.572-573 is needed to determine if this information changes the rational set forth here.
"TENNESSEE GENTRY FAMILIES. Nicholas Gentry of Davidson County" from the Journal of Gentry Genealogy was formerly copied verbatim in it's entirety in this profile. It has been removed due to copyright infringement and is now referenced on the Journal of Gentry Genealogy website.[2]
The following section contain miscellaneous notes from the Biography section, relocated here for further research. Some of these notes are conflicting.
His year of birth is in dispute. One manager had 1736, another had 1740 (although the source he sited stated 1743). More documentation is needed to determine date of birth.
