Biography

According to Ontario death records, Georgiana lost perhaps 3 sons + 1 daughter as infants due to childhood illness, in addition to the 4 daughters + 1 son that survived.

Georgiana herself died at age 53 (death record says 52) of cancer of the uterus.[1] In 1906, her husband (Walter George) remarried a Montreal-born woman Eliza Watson and they moved to Chicago to live with his son (George Walter). In the 1910 Chicago census, they all lived together with son, wife Augusta ("Gussie") and newborn twins.

Her name at death appears as "Marie G Fanning" in the Belleville Intelligencer (newspaper):

A first son from the marriage, "Harry Donaldson" was born in Oct. 1864 and baptised in Nov. 1864. The middle name "Donaldson" might provide a clue to the surname of one of her 2 paternal great-grandmothers.[2]

Family Connections

George Walter Fanning & his first wife Georgianna George shared at least one common ancestor: William Carpenter, who was born in 1605 in Wiltshire, England, and died in 1659 in Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts. Carpenter was 8 generations above both spouses: George Walter via both his maternal grandparents (who were also first cousins), and Georgianna via her maternal grandfather. Carpenter himself was 8 generations below John Carpenter (1372-1442), Town Clerk of London,[3] who authored the first book of English Common Law ("Liber Albus") & founded the City of London School for Boys.
