Elizabeth Gerard migrated from England to America.
Elizabeth Gerard was born about 1640 in Lancashire, England to Thomas Gerard, Gent & Susannah Snowe. She died 19 Dec 1716 St Marys, St Mary's County, Maryland. Elizabeth was an American Colonist who lived in Maryland.
Parents
Thomas Gerard, Gent. of St. Clements, Basford and Westwood Manors, St. Mary's County, Maryland & Westmoreland County, Virginia.
Wagner, Douglas W., states on pg 48 of The Early Generations of the Ellyson Family, that It is generally assumed that Robert Ellyson married Elizabeth, the daughter of Dr. Thomas Gerrard. However, he goes on to say that, Little is known of Elizabeth, except that on September 12, 1658, she was one of the sponsors of Henry Randolph's son, WIlliam. What Wagner fails to note is that is that the same source identifies her as Mrs. Elizabeth Ellison. Thus, we can be relatively certain that Elizabeth married Robert Ellyson (Ellison) sometime between the time she was transported (1650) and when she is said to have been the sponsor of William Randolph (1658). Wagner, then makes an error in calculating the marriage date of Robert Ellyson to Elizabeth when he says, There is no record of the marriage of Elizabeth Gerrard, but it was probably shortly after Thomas Gerrard's removal to Virginia in 1659.[2]
What we contend is that Robert Elllyson did marry an Elizabeth Gerard between 1650-1658, but not to the same Elizabeth Gerard that married (1) Nehamiah Blackistone abt. 1669 in Maryland, (2) Ralph Rymer, and (3) Joshua Guibert. We will provide evidence that indicates that there were two different Elizabeth's with connections to Thomas Gerard, each marrying different men.
Doliante, Sharon J., (1991), disputes a marriage between Elizabeth Gerard and Capt. Robert Ellyson (d. 1665/6 x bef. 28 Sep 1671), barber-surgeon & burgess, of James City co., VA, formerly of Maryland, but agrees that Ellyson's wife went by the first name, Elizabeth.[3][4]
Disputed children
We contend that the two Ellyson children are not the children of Elizabeth (Gerard) Guibert but the children of a different Elizabeth that married Robert Ellyson. The Ellyson children are not found in the will of Elizabeth (Gerard) Guibert (3rd and last spouse)
Fact: Robert Ellyson and Elizabeth _____ had at least two children, Gerard Robert Ellyson (or Robert Gerard) and Hannah (Ellyson) Armistead. The Ellyson children are noticeably absent from Elizabeth (Gerard) Guibert's will.
There is no mention of the Ellyson children in the will of Thomas Gerard however, it is not uncommon for grandchildren not to be named in a grandparent's will.
The Elizabeth that married Robert Ellyson (1615/20 - 1671) must have died prior to 1671, since the Ellyson children are said to be orphans after the death of Robert Ellyson.
There is no mention of Neh Blackistone marrying the "widow" of Robert Ellyson. Most sources give the marriage to Blackistone as being Elizabeth Gerrard's first.
Maryland and Virginia Colonials: Genealogies of Some Colonial Families gives Ekizabeth's marriage date to Blackiston as 6 May 1659
Genealogist S J Doliante expressed doubts that Elizabeth Gerard married Robert Ellyson, but did accept that her given name was Elizabeth. [3]
Based on the documented evidence, Elizabeth married Ellyson/Allison by or prior to 1658. Robert Ellyson is said to have died about 1671. Elizabeth is said to have married Neh Blakiston in 1669. If these dates are correct it could not have been this Elizabeth Gerard (Gerard-896) that married Ellyson.
Elizabeth Gerard was transported by her father Thomas Gerard 1650 who we believe may have been the Elizabeth Gerard that married Blakiston, Rymer and Guibert. Thomas Gerard also transported two nieces, Winifred and Bridget (dau of his brother Marmeduke) in 1658, then in 1659 Thomas Gerard transported the 2nd Elizabeth Gerard (possibly another niece). Elizabeth Gerard is also thought to have been born c. 1640-45. The Elizabeth Gerrard that married Robert Ellyson was born abt 1627-30. Source: The New Early Settlers of Maryland lists two Elizabeth's. One Elizabeth Gerard transported in 1650 (daughter of Thomas Gerard) and the other Elizabeth Gerrard transported by 1659.
Elizabeth (Gerard) Guibert died abt 1716 in Maryland according to probate records. Elizabeth (Gerard) Ellyson died in Virginia prior to her husband (by 1671/72). In Oct, 1672 the court of James City Co,, VA ordered that Thomas Viccars be the guardian of Gerrard Robert Ellyson, son and heir of Major Ellyson.
It is estimated that Elizabeth (Gerard) Blackiston was born abt 1640-45 (Nehamiah Blackiston b 1636) and she died in Maryland 1716.
It is estimated that Elizabeth (Gerard) Ellyson was born abt 1627-30 (Robert Ellyson b 1615-20) and she died in Virginia bef 1672.
First Marriage
Col. Nehemiah Blakiston (See Marriage Date below) [5] (b. abt. 1636 - d. 11 Dec 1693),[3] son of John Blakiston, esq. of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, co. Northumb. (bp. 21 Aug 1603 Sedgefield, co. Durham) & Elizabeth (b. c 1536 - d. abt 31 Jul 1582), dau. of Sir George Bowes of Streatlam, co. Durham & Muriel Eure.[6] Occupation: Attorney, Surveyor, Comptroller General, Acting King's Attorney, Chief Justice of Provincial Court, Speaker of the Assembly, 1691, Chancellor and Commissary General, Coroner, 4th son.[7] Member of Parliament, for Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1641; Mayor of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1645.
Douglas Richardson has Nehemiah Blakiston and Elizabeth Gerard married on May 6, 1669 [8]
Douglas Richardson documents that Blakiston died before Dec 11, 1693.[8] It is known that Elizabeth remarried prior to 1701 because of Inventory and account records found in the Probate Records of Maryland dated 1701 and 1703 [9][10] We also have Probate records filed in 1699 by Ralph Rymer and his spouse, Elizabeth Blakiston, the widow of Neh. Blakiston. [11][12][13]
Mary m. Matthew Mason (see will in research notes below)
Second Marriage
Ralph Rymer - no children[14] Douglas Richardson has Ralph Rymer and Elizabeth Blakiston married by 1696 [8]
Third Marriage
Joshua Guibert (First marriage Elizabeth Barber)[15][16][17] Douglas Richardson does not give a marriage date for Joshua Guibert and Elizabeth, but does give 1713 as the death year for Joshua Guibert.[8] They had no children.
(Third Marriage) Children
Thomas [citation needed] Douglas Richardson does not mention a child for Joshua and Elizabeth Guibert and the only children mentioned in the will of Elizabeth are the Blakiston children.

Elizabeth's birth or baptism date isn't clear. England & Wales Christening Records Winwick, Lancashire, England shows an Elizabeth baptism date 2 Jan 1927 daughter of Thomas Gerard no mother listed. Susanna is listed as the eldest daughter (baptized 19 Apr 1635) Another record gives baptism date of 2 Jan 1630 [23]Elizabeth would have been born after 1635. Other siblings baptized (per wikitree profiles) 1633, 1637, 1639, 1641, 1644, 1647, & 1652. Several of those dates can't be correct since Thomas was in Maryland and Susanna in England. Susannah and Thomas didn't marry until 1629.
Birthdate
Our contention is that there were two Elizabeth Gerards, one born abt 1627-30, that married Robert Ellyson (b1615-1620), and the other Elizabeth, born abt 1640-45, that married three times. First to Neh. Blackiston, 2ndly to Ralph Rymer, and 3rdly to Joshua Guibert.
Will
Will of Elizabeth Guibert lists son John Blackistone, daughters Susanna Attaway, Rebecca Walters, Mary Mason, and Anne Blackistone and granddaughter Elizabeth Blackistone and grandson Nehemiah Blackistone. Witnesses John Coode, William Gibson, James Brian, Katherine Gibson.
Two Elizabeth's - The New Early Settlers of Maryland lists two Elizabeth's. One transported in 1650 (daughter of Thomas Gerard)[18] and a second Elizabeth transported by 1659.[24]
Marriage Date Maryland and Virginia Colonials: Genealogies of Some Colonial Families gives the marriage date to Blackiston as 6 May 1659[25]
Doliante (1991), states that Ellyson did NOT marry Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Gerard, as Wagner (1964) asserts.[26] Elizabeth Gerard was apparently married to Nemiah Blakiston (d. 1693).[27][28]
Doliante (1991), does agree that the first name of Ellyson's wife was, Elizabeth[29]
Sponsor
This Elizabeth was one of the sponsors of the baptism of William Randolph (b. 12 Sep 1658), son of Henry Randolph and Elizabeth. The event lists her name as, "Mrs. Elizabeth Ellison."[30]

Most recent big update to this profile was researched by Gerard-337 & David Douglass after some disputes over another Elizabeth who is not a duplicate.
Changed date of birth from 1627 to est 1640, place unk. See "Evidence of two Elizabeth Gerards", points #9-11. This change is based on evidence that there were two Elizabeths, one (b 1640-45) that married Neh.Blackiston, and another Elizabeth (b 1627) that married Robert Ellyson, The Elizabeth Gerard of this profile is the one (b c1640-d1716) is ;the one that married Neh. Blackiston, Ralph Rymer, and Joshua Guibert
Based on the evidence documented in the section. "Evidence of two Elizabeth Gerards" and in research notes elsewhere, Robert Ellyson Ellyson-40 has been detached as the spouse of Elizabeth Gerard Gerard-896.
I have added the Southern Colonies Project as a co-manager and project protected this historically significant profile to protect merge order. The profile is potentially contentious and has at least one disputed relationship and dates. There is some evidence which has surfaced that indicates that Dr. Thomas Gerard may have been married 3 times, including an earlier marriage in England. This is being explored. This does not impact the edit rights of the profiles' trusted list members or PM's. It also does not prevent other interested members from making collaborative contributions that add to the quality and accuracy of this profile.
The evidence contained in this profile Gerard-896 places substantial doubt that Elizabeth (Gerard) Blakiston was married to Dr Robert Ellyson. In addition, Elizabeth Gerard is said to have married Blakiston in 1669. Ellyson was still living at that time according to his bio. Also to be considered is that the will of Elizabeth Guibert (indicated here as 4th marriage) did not list any Ellyson children as heirs. The Elizabeth (some sources say Hannah) that married Robert Ellyson (Allison/Ellison) is said to have had two children with Ellyson, Robert Gerrard Ellyson and Hannah (Ellyson) Amistead.
In light of this evidence I am proposing that Elizabeth (Gerard) Blakiston be detached as the spouse of Dr Robert Ellyson. If you have any objections, comments or other evidence to support the marriage relationship to Robert Ellyson please leave a comment here on this profile.

Thank you for your response. One thing I am missing in your reply is evidence that Elizabeth married Dr Ellyson/Allison. She is said to have had two children by Robert Ellyson, Gerard Robert and Hannah however they are not mentioned in her will. Even genealogist S J Doliante expressed doubt that Elizabeth Gerard was the spouse of Robert Ellyson. You give marriage dates and specifics for Elizabeth's marriages to Blakiston, Rymer and Guibert but no information regarding the marriage to Ellyson. I am in the Doliante camp and have doubts that this Elizabeth Gerard married Robert Ellyson. I base this on several things:
1. Fact: Robert Ellyson and Elizabeth _____ had at least two children, Gerard Robert Elyson (or Robert Gerard) and Hannah (Ellyson) Armistead. They are noticably absent from their supposed mother's (Elizabeth Gerard Guibert) will
2. There is no mention of the Ellyson children in the will of Thomas Gerard
3. Genealogist S J Doliante expressed doubts that Elizabeth Gerard married Robert Ellyson, but did accept that her given name was Elizabeth.
4. Based on dates currently documented, Elizabeth married Ellyson/Allison prior to 1658. Robert Ellyson is said to have died about 1671. Elizabeth is said to have married Neh Blakiston in 1669. IF these dates are correct it could not have been this Elizabeth Gerard that married Ellyson.
5. Elizabeth Gerard was transported by her father Thomas Gerard 1650. Thomas Gerard also transported two nieces, Winifred and Bridget (dau of his brother Marmeduke) in 1658, then in 1659 Thomas Gerard transported the 2nd Elizabeth Gerard (possibly another niece), who some believe may have been the Elizabeth Gerard that married Blakiston, Rymer and Guibert. She (the 2nd Elizabeth Gerard) is also thought to have been born c. 1640-45. Source: The New Early Settlers of Maryland lists two Elizabeth's. One transported in 1650 (daughter of Thomas Gerard) and the other Elizabeth transported by 1659.
Research is ongoing.
6. Maryland and Virginia Colonials: Genealogies of Some Colonial Families gives the marriage date to Blackiston as 6 May 1659
After reviewing this, I am totally confused. I am not going to take any action on this because I don't really know what is being said here or how it all works. Family trees confuse me and this is the reason I am trying to map all this out. Sorry about all this. KJ
The thinking is that the Elizabeth Gerard (1627 - 1716) that married Neh. Blakiston is not the Elizabeth _____ that married Dr Robert Ellyson. (1615/20 - 1671). The reasons that led to that conclusion are as follows.
1. The Elizabeth that married Ellyson died about 1671 or before. Her children became orphans when Dr Ellyson died. (The Elizabeth that married Blakiston, Rymer and Guibert died abt 1716.) Not the same Elizabeth
2. There is no indication that Neh. Blakiston married the widow of Dr Ellyson, or that he became the step-father of the Ellyson children. Not the same Elizabeth.
3. Elizabeth Gerard married Neh. Blakiston abt 1669 (one source has 1658/9). It is thought that Dr Ellyson was still living at that time but it may be that his wife, Elizabeth _______ had predeceased him. Not the same Elizabeth.
4. Elizabeth Guibert (d 1716) mentions the Blakiston children in her will, but there is not word of any Ellyson children in her will. Not the same Elizabeth.
5. There is some evidence that there were two Elizabeth Gerard's (relationship uncertain), one transported in 1650 (by Dr Thomas Gerard), and a 2nd Elizabeth Gerard in 1659.
6. If the Elizabeth Gerard that married Blakiston, in 1669 was born in 1627 she would have been in her 40's when they began having children with him. And, abt 90 years old when she died. Blakiston was born in 1636. Just a guess, but more likely that the Elizabeth Gerard that married Neh. Blakiston in 1669 was born c. 1640-45, making her abt 24 when they married and a more likely age of 71 when she died.
7. Dr Robert Ellyson was born abt 1615-20, so a 1627 birthdate for the Elizabeth he married would not be unreasonable. She would have been around 27-30 when they married (1658 or before). She died before 1672 (est.age 45)
These are not the only pieces of evidence for why it is believed that Elizabeth Ellyson and Elizabeth Blakiston/Rymer/Guibert are not the same person but I do think there is enough evidence to raise the question.
One other item I should have mentioned is this. Elizabeth Gerard's last husband, Joshua Guibert d. 1713 in St Mary's Co., MD where they lived. Guess where Elizabeth Gerard Guibert died ? She is said to have died in 1716 in St Mary's Co., MD. Dr Robert Ellyson and Elizabeth, his wife were both dead by 1671/72 and they both died in Virginia.
Gerard-1379 and Gerard-896 are not ready to be merged because: Currently Dennis, David Douglass and myself have been working on this. Gerard-1379 and Gerard-896 are not duplicates right now. Currently there's no proof Thomas Gerard is the father of Elizabeth (Gerard) Ellyson. Postponing with an unmerged match for the time being.
Currently Dennis, David Douglass and myself have been working on this. They are not duplicates right now. Currently there's no proof Thomas Gerard is the father of this Elizabeth. Postponing with an unmerged match for the time being.
Agree with the consensus that Gerrard-54 and Gerrard-5 could be the same. There will be a lot of work to clean it up, but they do appear to likely represent the same person.
Gerrard-54 and Gerrard-5 appear to represent the same person because: Were marked rejected match but appear to represent the same person. Same spouse, father, birth and death info very similar.

6. Maryland and Virginia Colonials: Genealogies of Some Colonial Families gives the marriage date to Blackiston as 6 May 1659
These are not the only pieces of evidence for why it is believed that Elizabeth Ellyson and Elizabeth Blakiston/Rymer/Guibert are not the same person but I do think there is enough evidence to raise the question.
