Biography

Captain Thomas Gerry of Newton Bushel, Great Britain, born at Newton Abbot, Devonshire, England, March 14, 1702.[1] His father was Daniel Gerry of Newton Abbot, Devonshire, England, who married a wife named Lydia, by whom he had three children. Daniel and John who remained in England and Thomas, who emigrated to America.

On Dec 16, 1734 he first married Elizabeth Greenleaf born June 1, 1716, died there Sept 2, 1771, aged 55. at Marblehead, Thomas Gerry came to America from Newton Abbot, Devonshire, England in 1730 as captain of a trading vessel from London. After marriage he relinquished the sea and became a merchant at Marblehead.

He resolved to give his son an excellent education. His son Elbridge Gerry entered Harvard College, and graduated with the title of A.B. in 1762. His son went on to be Governor of Massachusetts and the 5th Vice President of the United States.[2]

Secondly on May 6, 1773, married Mrs. Elizabeth Lemmon, presumably widow of Dr. Joseph Lemmon of Marblehead, who died in 1772.

Captain Thomas Gerry died at Marblehead, Massachusetts, July 13, 1774, aged 72 years 4 months.[1]
