Biography

Martha was born in 1822 in Maine. She is the daughter of George Washington Getchell and Mary Berry.

She married Jacob Longfellow in 1838 in Machias, Washington County, Maine.[1] In 1850, the family was living in Marshfield, Washington, Maine.[2] With a family of four children, they took a three week journey to St. Anthony, Ramsey, Minnesota Territory, and arrived on July 2, 1851. Her husband established his claim in Brooklyn Township and they moved into the house he built in 1853. [3]

There she lived, raising nine children, and there she died, in Brooklyn Township, Minnesota. Mary and her family were Minnesota Territorial Pioneers and she is one of the First Settlers included in One-Place Study: Historical Brooklyn Township, Hennepin County, Minnesota.

She died at age 58 of 'consumption' on April 3,1880.[4]. Burial was in the Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis, section 26, lot 246, Grave 16.[5][6]

The newspaper published in July 1878 that she owed taxes on a lot [lot 4 block 11, $28.72] in the Jackson, Daniel and Whitney Addition to Minneapolis.[7] Also published was the ordeal of probate, with her son Levi being the administrator.[8]
