Biography

Marran Gibbs, the daughter of John and Mary Gibbs, was born in Middlesex County, Virginia.[1][2] She was subsequently christened on 30 January 1708/1709 in Christ Church Parish in Middlesex County.[3]

Marran was later married to a man named John Barnett, the son of John and Ann Barnett, in Christ Church Parish on 13 November 1728.[4]

Sometime prior to 1733 John and Marran apparently moved into Spotsylvania County, Virginia, where they resided within the boundaries of Saint Mark's Parish.[5] On 3 April 1733, shortly after moving to Spotsylvania County, John purchased 184 acres of land in St. Marks Parish from a man named Richard Maulder. 6 John’s brother-in-law, Zachariah Gibbs, purchased the adjoining 100 acres from Mr. Maulder on the same day.[6] This property was situated in that portion of Spotsylvania County that was later incorporated into Orange Co., Virginia in 1734.

John Barnett died in 1750 in Orange Co., Virginia. His will, which had been written on 1 April 1750, was probated on 24 May 1750 in Orange County, Virginia. Marran, who survived John, died sometime after this date, in Virginia [7] .[8]

All seven of John and Marran's children were either named in John Barnett’s will, or were identified through subsequent probate records when they became of age or married and various articles inventoried in John Barnett’s estate were distributed to them by their mother.[9]

Origin

John Gibbs and his wife, Mary, had two daughters named Marrin or Marran. The elder was baptized on 20 April 1707; she died young. This profile represents the 2nd or younger daughter, who was baptized on 30 Jan 1708/9.

According to the Christ Church Parish Register, a Marrin Gibbs was baptized on 20 April 1707, the daughter of John Gibbs and his wife, Mary (p 70).[10] Jack Mac Donald reports this Marrin Gibbs was an elder sister who died young (p 7).[11]

Christ Church Parish Register also shows a Marran Gibbs, who was christened on 30 Jan 1708/9 at Christ Church Parish, Middlesex County, Virginia, a daughter of John Gibbs and Mary, his wife (p 72).[10] According to Jack Mac Donald, this was the Marran Gibbs who married to John Barnett.[11]

Marriage

Marran Gibbs married on 13 Nov 1728 in Christ Church Parish, Middlesex, Virginia, to John Barnett (p 166).[10]
