Mr. William Gibbs, an old settler and magistrate of Golden Bay, came to New Zealand with his wife and seven children in the ship “Duke of Bronte,” in 1851 and settled in Golden Bay.
He took up residence on the east side of the Aorere rivermouth in 1855. He later moved to Totaranui.
He was the Founder of Gibbstown (Collingwood).
He passed away in 1896.
William Gibbs (1819/1820 – 7 November 1896) was a 19th-century Member of Parliament from the Nelson Region of New Zealand. Gibbs migrated to New Zealand in 1851 and purchased a large block of land at Totaranui. Much of this land is now incorporated into the Abel Tasman National Park. He completed a large homestead there for his wife and eight children, where they lived until moving to Nelson in 1892 when Gibbs retired.
His daughter Hannah Sarah Gibbs married Alexander Mackay at Collingwood in 1863.
He represented the Collingwood electorate from 1873 to 1881, when he was defeated for Motueka. His son W. B. Gibbs stood in the Nelson electorate in the 1887 election, but came third against Henry Levestam and Jesse Piper.
The town of Collingwood was originally called Gibbstown after Gibbs.
Gibbs died aged 76 at his home in Nelson on 7 November 1896, and was buried at Wakapuaka Cemetery.
Victoria University writes: Mr. William Gibbs , who sat for Collingwood in the House of Representatives from 1874 to 1881, settled at Totaranui in the early days; but afterwards retired and lived in Nelson. Mr. Gibbs owned the land on which the township of Collingwood was built when the gold diggings broke out there, and was the local Magistrate and Warden. He died many years ago.
