Biography

Asahel Gibbs is a descendant of Mayflower passenger William White.[1] Asahel Gibbs, Sr was born on 28 MAY 1748 in Sudbury, Middlesex, Massachusetts to Isaac Gibbs and Thankful Wheeler. ("Asael [dup. Asal], s. Isaac and Thankful [dup. Thankfull], May 28 [dup. May 27], 1748." Sudbury VR p 48)[2][3][1] His father Isaac Gibbs was living in 5 Jul 1785 when probate records state that Isaac Gibbs, aged 85, was non-compos mentas and that his son Jonas was appointed guardian. Isaac Gibbs' children signed the record including Asahel Gibbs.[3]

On the 1798 Tax record of Sudbury Asahel Gibbs Jr's farm is seen next to Asahel Gibbs Sr's farm. This taken with his place of birth given in his death record as Sudbury it leaves little doubt that Asahel Gibbs Jr was the son of Asahel Gibbs Sr. Other farms nearby include several other farms belonging to the Goodenow family including Joseph Goodenow his mother-in-laws brother who was administrator of several probate cases and their brother Jotham's farm. Another farm on the list nearby is Asahel Gibbs Sr's brother Isaac Gibbs.[4]
