There were 15 children attributed to him and his marriage to Lee Ann - source - http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:1418419&id=I36597248
George W Gibbs, after studying law and coming of age, started West on a horse given him by his father (John Nicholas Gibbs). It was customary in those days when a son came of age to give him a horse, bridle, and saddle. He got as far as Elizabethton,KY and put up for the night at the inn. The innkeeper was in serious trouble - his son having been arrested for stealing a cow. When he found that his guest for the night was a lawyer, he offered a year's board if he would defend his son. He did so and won the suit. A young man with no other resources than a horse, bridle and saddle, felt a year's board was a great inducement, so young Gibbs stayed on and soon there was a greater inducement - a beautiful young woman of French extraction - Lee Ann Dibrell(Debrui l). After their marriage, April 12, 1810, they moved to Sparta, TN to live. No one seems to know how long he lived there or wheather any of his children were born there. He bought lands there which, after they were sold, proved to be coal bearing. From Sparta, they moved to Nashville, or rather, on a farm near Nashville, which was named Waverly for Sir Walter Scott's novels which were just coming out. He practiced law and was the president of a bank. Carl Gibbs, of Chattanooga, TN, his grandson, has in his posession a banknote, the first one signed by him. It is No. 1.In 1824, when Lafayette visited Nashville, General Gibbs was a member of the reception committee and went as far as Louisville to meet him. General and Mrs. Gibbs attended the reception given in his honor in Nashville, and Mrs. Gibbs' portrait was painted in the dress she wore. This picture and a companion of General Gibbs were painted by Ralph Earl, the artist who painted Andrew Jackson's portrait."About 1837, when Jackson vetoed the National Bank Bill, it ruined George Gibbs financially, and he moved to West TN, wherea large tract of land had come into his posession (5,000 acres)in payment for his services as a lawyer. George W Gibbs served in the War of 1812 as Capt. of a Co. of TN Militia, 2nd Regt. of TN Vols. commanded by Col. Thos. Benton."One of the first lawyers of Knox Co. Moved to Sparta in White Co. and was a leading lawyer there. He founded the bank in the town. Later he moved to West Tennessee where he founded Union City in Obion Co in 1854. George Washington Gibbs was born october 3, 1784 in Orange Co. N.C. Where he received his legal education is not known to the writer, but he was admitted to the Knox County Bar in 1806. His name appeared often in the 1806-1811 Court Minutes for White County, Tennessee, and the name Gibbs & Harris appears several times in connection with different legal cases in that county. From a manuscript belonging to Mrs. Margaret Gibbs Bell, a granddaughter, the writer copied several items of interest which throw considerable light on the early life of George We. Gibbs. George W. Gibbs, after studying law and coming of age, started West on a horse given him by his father (John Nicholas Gibbs). It was customary in those days when a son came of age to give him a horse, bridle and saddle. He got as far as Elizabethton, Kentucky, and put up for the night at the inn. When he found that his guest for the night was a lawyer he offered him a year's board if he would defend his son. He did so and won the suit.

A young man with no other resources than a horse, bridle and saddle, felt a year's board was a great inducement, so young Gibbs stayed on and soon there was greater inducement - a beautiful young woman of French extraction - Lee Ann Dibrell (Debriul). After their marriage, April 12, 1810, they moved to Sparta, Tennessee, to live. No one seems to know how long he lived there, or whether any of his children were born there. He bought lands there which, after they were sold, proved to be coal bearing.

General and Mrs. Gibbs attended the reception given in his honor in Nashville, and Mrs. Gibbs portrait was painted in the dress she wore. This picture and a companion of General Gibbs were painted by Ralph Earl, the artist who painted Andrew Jackson's portrait.

About 1837, when Jackson vetoed the National Bank Bill, it ruined George Gibbs financially, and he moved to West Tennessee, where a large tract of land had come into his possession (5,000 acres) in payment for his services as a lawyer.
