Eliza Gibbs was born October 20, 1820, in Athens, Ohio. She married Ira L. Brown in 1838. They had two sons, Cortland and Ira Jr. After Ira Brown's death in 1841, Eliza kept house for her father, Wareham "Wash" Gibbs in Wapello County, Iowa.[1]
In 1852, Ben Hoskinson's first wife, Roseanna died. Ben and Eliza married on Nov. 11, 1852, in Wapello County, Iowa.[2] In 1857, they moved to Oskaloosa, Kansas, with Ben's five surviving children, Eliza's two sons, and her father, Wash Gibbs.[3] They had seven more children together. They operated a grocery store in Oskaloosa, Kansas, until 1875 when they moved to Wabaunsee County.[4] Ben served as sheriff there, and the family farmed. In 1889, Ben and Eliza participated in one of the Oklahoma Territory land runs but returned to Kansas,[5] where Ben died near Hardtner in 1891.[6] Eliza moved to Washington State with her daughter Hattie and died there in 1900.[7][8][9]
