Biography

Ernest William Gibbs, baptized 23 May 1886[1] in Clea next the Sea, Norfolk, United Kingdom, son of Willem Emery Gibbs and Louise Elizabeth Gibbs. He passed away 4 of 5 June 1916 in the Colaba War Hospital in Bombay, India, sergeant in the 2e Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. He died of food poisoning (ptomain poisoning) of cholera.

Ernest William Gibbs married 29 August 1907 in the Christ Church, Addington in Durban, Natal, South Africa with Ellen Holton[2]

Trivia

A letter from the Bombay Young Men’s Christian Association in October 1916 to the widow shows that “he made himself very popular in this concerts and used to dress up in female’s clothes and impersonate a female’s voice”[3]

Ernest William Gibbs left Durban on the s.s. Umtata on the 1st week of September 1915 for Bombay. Gibbs had joined a unit of the Imperial Forces and took part in the Mesopotamiam operations. Gibbs died in Bombay whilst on leave from Mesopotamia. He died of ptomaine poisoning or cholera. Above extracted from the letter by Ellen Gibbs to the Master of the Supreme Court, Pietermartizburg, on 1 March 1917 in which Ellen is claiming the estate of Ernest William Gibbs as they were married in Community of goods.
