Biography

Betty was born on an unusual date, Feb 29, 1940. She was the daughter of George Gibson and Florence Elizabeth Whitsett. The marriage was short (about three years).

George had some difficulty getting and keeping a job. Letters in early 1940's exist from Florence to her siblings expressing her frustration. After the divorce Florence married Edward T. Mayes. They had a son, also named Edward. That family lived in Portland, OR. Betty said Ed was a good father to her.

Betty was married at about age 21 to Larry Gordon. They may have lived in Portland for a time, but for most of their marriage, they lived in Kirkland, Washington. A daughter . Dawn Marie, was born to them. A son was born later. His name is not available at this time.

She passed away in 2012.[1][2]

When I was three or four years old, I went to visit my aunt and uncle at our grandfather's farm. I saw a pretty girl with red hair in braids sitting on a swing. I can still picture it now. She was a stunning child several years older than me. I think that was when Betty stayed with our Uncle Willis and Aunt Phyllis for a time when Florence was going through a divorce from George Gibson.

I knew, when I first added this profile for my cousin, Betty Ellen, that she had a daughter and son, but could not remember the boy's name. I just found in family records, a cute picture of son, Matthew Frank, when he was three years old. I added his name, first to Ancestry.com, then to Wiki-Tree. A name, Scott Alan, kept popping up, as another son, but no real evidence came with those pop-ups. He was born in 1971. I did not think Betty and Larry had two sons, but perhaps they did. I have been trying to find out more about Scott. The only thing I have found is that he seemed to live in the state of WA for most of his life. I find no birth or marriage records for him.
I have seen pictures of Betty's and Larry's tombstones at Military Cemetery in Kent, King, WA. They are rather large with the same design, and are quite attractive. Larry's mentions his military service in USAF.
