William Gibson fell in love with Elizabeth Kirby whose plantation joined the Gibson plantation. Their families would not consent for them to marry. They decided to elope. With the help of the Gibson servants, they were given the best saddle horses, left, and went to the home of a minister who lived nearby to be married. At first they were afraid to go back home, but later they returned and all was forgiven. About a year later a baby was born to them, both mother and baby died.
William decided to come to Wood County, now Wirt County, where he married Elizabeth Ruble in 1851. To this union was born seven sons and two daughters: Ellsworth Poe "Elza", Lewis Albert, George G, William Henry, E. Lee, Charles, Jasper Newton, Saphronia, and Almira. [1]
