Primary sources relating to the father of Martin and Peter Gibson are scarce.
The Gibson family was associated with Ballyvoe House in County Clare, Ireland, for many years. As the Kean(e) family were still in Ballyvoe House in 1814,[1] it appears that the Gibson connection with Ballyvoe did not begin until Thomas Gibson III moved there shortly after 1814. However, some sources assert that the much older John Gibson was born in Ballyvoe House around 1765.
Thomas Gibson III (born about 1777) and Martin Gibson (born about 1800) both spent time living in Kilballyowen parish and were certainly closely related, possibly brothers. If they were brothers, then their father was probably called Thomas rather than John. There are irreconcilable differences between various secondary accounts of the relationships between the Gibsons.
