Biography

Arrived in Colonial America in 1796

Joseph served in the United States Revolutionary War, from North Carolina. He received a pension from 1831-1846.[1]

Served in the War of 1812

Research Notes

Joseph married Mary McCree or McCrae in 1789. However, I can't find enough other information about her to add her to the profile.[2]

The Joseph Gibson who married Mary McCree may not be the right Joseph Gibson for two reasons: (1) J. S. Smiley has Samuel Baxter Gibson's parents as Joseph and Gemima.[3] and the line of descent used on an application for a Sons of the American Revolution membership includes people that are not a part of the Joseph/Gemima family line. It does include Mary McCree.

The information above creates puzzles, as well. If Joseph arrived in the United States in 1791, he could not have fought in the Revolution which ended in 1783 or married Mary McCree in North Carolina in 1789. It seems there are two Joseph Gibsons:

First, a Joseph Gibson who arrived in 1791, married Gemima, and fathered Samuel Baxter Gibson.

Second, a Joseph Gibson who was here much earlier, fought in the Revolution, and married Mary McCree in 1789.

These need to be detangled.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:
