A wide circle of friends in New York, in Albany, in Canandaigua, and throughout the country, will learn with sincere regret of the sudden but unexpected death, in New York, of Mrs. Sarah Maria Gibson Sherman, the widow of the late Mr. Watts Sherman, and a daughter of the late Mr. Henry B. Sarah M. Gibson, widow of Watts Sherman, was the daughter of the late Henry B. Gibson of Canandaigua, one of its earliest settlers, and one of the most successful and conspicuous citizens of Western new York. For some years after her marriage Mrs Sherman lived in Albany where she held a brilliant position in the society of the State Capitol. In 1851 she removed to New York. Her house, at the corner of Twenty-second street and Fifth Avenue became a favorite resort of the most agreeable and cultivated people of the City and of the most distinguished foreigners who visited this country. She was fond of art, had a fine knowledge of bric-a-brac at the time when such knowledge was by far more rare than the pretense of it is now. She could, and did, use her pen with piquancy and spirit. She traveled much abroad, particularly after the death of her husband in 1865. She was kind and affable to all who knew her, and her very generous nature overflowed in acts of love and charity to all. [Talcotts Genealogical Notes of NY & N. Engl. Families - Albany 1883 - pp. 717-718]
