Vida May Gibson was born in 1901 in Hannaford Valley, about 12 miles north of Centralia. She moved to the Montesano area in 1916, where she lived with Alice Moch's family. She graduated from Montesano High School in 1920 and briefly held a clerical job in an office.
Vida was married to Stanley Mustard in 1920 by a justice of the peace in Centralia, Washington. On their wedding night, Vida discovered Stanley was a sleepwalker. Their hotel was near the train station and in the middle of the night, Stanley heard a train whistle, got out of bed, pulled the sheet off, and began waving it out the window. Vida asked what in the world he was doing, and he said he had a friend coming in on the train and needed to flag down the locomotive's engineer so he'd be sure to stop and let Stanley's friend off. Vida wondered what kind of man she had married who had friends arriving on trains that needed to be flagged down.
In 1922, Vida and Stanley moved to the Mustard family farm in Brady, Washington, where she lived for the rest of her life. She raised five children, and was active in the Garden Club and in her church.
