John was born on 14 September 1778 at Aushenloden farm (3 miles SW of Paisley), Abbey (Paisley), Renfrewshire, Scotland[1]. He was the son of William Gibson and Margaret Aitken.
He married Jean Dickson on 22 March 1801 at Abbey, Renfrewshire, Scotland[2]. They had the following children.

Soon after their marriage, they emigrated to the United States. They settled in Ryegate, Caledonia, Vermont[3].
