Biography

William Gilbert was christened on 18 Jan 1735/6 at St Hilary's Parish Church in Cornwall with his parents named as William and Margaret Gilbert.[1]

"The parish of St Hilary once included the Town of Marazion and the offshore island St Michael’s Mount."[2]
It has been suggested (prior to an edit of this profile on 17 Jun 18) that his parents were "William Gilbart and Margaret Henna. However, this couple married 18 months after William was baptised and at Gorran which is 45 miles from St Hilary.

William's siblings:

George Gilbert baptised as George Jelbartt, 3 Sep 1731 at Ludgvan (which was the home parish of his mother Margery Crews, who was the daughter of George Crews and Anne Matthew)
Joan Gilbert as one was baptised at St Hilary to William and Margery Gilbert on 14 Jan 1740)
Ann Gilbert as one was baptised at St Hilary to William and Margery Gilbert on 20 Apr 1746)

William married Jane Laity on 2 April 1758 at St. Hilary Church in Cornwall. They had 12 children:

William Gilbert 1759 - 1763
George Gilbert 1760
Jane Gilbert 1763
Ann Gilbert 1765
William Gilbert 1767 - 1847
Mary Gilbert 1769
Margery Gilbert 1771
Joan Gilbert 1773
John Gilbert 1775 - 1856
Thomas Gilbert 1777 - 1837
Grace Gilbert 1779
Jeremiah Gilbert 1783

The family moved from St.Hilary to Gwinear parish some time after 1783. A number of the children married in Gwinear or neighbouring parishes, but William and Jane and the younger children moved again, to Pridden in St. Buryan before 1800.

Gilbert-5685 and Gilbert-1361 appear to represent the same person because: These are the same - dates and location match. As does the spouse, which I haven't added yet for the newer William.
