Biography

This profile is part of the Gilbert Name Study.

Jane Gilbert married James Spencer in Sheffield, Yorkshire in 1851. [1] Subject to verification from the Sheffiled Church Marriage Register, it is believed that the marriage took place on 29 Sep 1851. In 1861 Jane was living with husband James, a glass packer, in Mexborough with three children.[2]

Jane Spencer was travelling to America aboard the William Tapscott. The ship had cleared customs in N.Y. Their journey went by rail to the Missisippii River, then by paddle wheeler to St. Louis, Missouri, then west by river boat to St. Joseph Missouri, arriving on July 4th, 1862. Jane was very I'll from the heat. By the time they were about a mile from Council Bluff, IA., she passed away from heat stroke along with another man. They were both buried on the banks of the Missouri River and James her husband had to proceed on alone with his four children. James eventually migrated north into Illinois then West on to Utah with other Mormons fleeing persecution.

Research Notes

Her 1851 marriage record should confirm the name of her father. She is thought to be the Jane Gilbert baptised at Mansfield on 6 Aug 1823[3] to parents Jane and John Gilbert and that her age of 34 in the 1861 census is not correct. Their daughter Jane appears in the 1841 and 1851 censuses. There is no burial before 1861 and no other Jane Gilbert baptised in Mansfield to fit the 1861 age. If she is the 1823 Jane, then her grandfather is William Gilbert.
