Biography

Frederick Grant Gilbert is born on September 7, 1898 probably in Flos Township, Simcoe County, where his parents farm. His parents are Charles Gilbert (1855-1935) of English descent and Sarah Jackson (1854-1947) of Scottish descent. Flos Township, now part of Clearview Township, is north and west of Barrie. Frederick is two years old, living with his family in Flos, in the 1901 census and he is still at home, at age 12, in the 1911 census. “Fred G.” is 22 years old in the 1921 census records, still living at home, and his occupation is a farmer.

On March 23, 1935 Frederick marries Vera Victoria Hall (1908-1984) in Wyevale, Simcoe County. Wyevale, in Tiny Township, is about 45 kilometres north of Barrie and about 5 kilometres east of the shores of Georgian Bay.

Little is known about the life of Frederick. He probably went by the name “Grant.” He was the postmaster in Wyevale from November 6, 1941 until March 19, 1951. Grant and Vera move south to Elmvale by 1957. Elmvale is about 15 kilometres north of Barrie, Ontario. Grant, a descendent of William Paterson and Sarah Lockie, and Vera attend the 1957 Paterson family reunion at Lynwood Heights Public School in Agincourt, Scarborough, Ontario (now Toronto). Grant dies in 1959 and is buried in the Elmvale Union Presbyterian Cemetery, along with his wife and one child. Vera dies in 1984.

The eight children of Grant and Vera are shown below. There is some uncertainty about this list as different sources give different names for several of the spouses.
