George Gilbert was born in 1842 at Gwennap in Cornwall England to George GILBERT and Elizabeth DAVY. He was baptised at Carharrack in Gwennap Wesleyan Methodist Church on 29 May 1843 aged 1 year and 4 months, with his parents named as George and Elizabeth Gilbert living at Gwennap.[1] In the 1851 census he is shown at Killivose, St Allen, Truro, Cornwall, and born at Gwennap, Cornwall, with father George Gilbert aged 50 an Ag Lab born at Devonport, Cornwall and mother Elizabeth Gilbert aged 48 born at St Stephens, Cornwall, and siblings Celena (aged 13) and Mary Ann (aged 6). He married at All saints Singleton NSW to Maria RAMPTON. He died 1926 Hamilton, Newcastle NSW aged 83 years and was buried at Sandgate cemetery with wife Maria. George Gilbert arrived in the colony 1 April 1857 on the 'FITZJAMES" aged 15 with his brother Eli aged 21 and his wife Frances aged 20, place of origin was Cornwell, Wesleyan Methodist and farm labourers.
