Biography

This profile is part of the Gilbert Name Study.

Mary Ann (Gilbert) Sexton was born 1756 died 1853.[1],[2] She married in 1780, "Dilly" John Sexton (1759 - 4 Jul 1844) [son of Joseph Saxton and Phoebe Campbell ]

Proof of Parentage

  • On August 30, 1844 in Sevier County Tennessee, Elizabeth Galyear, 72, testified in support of Mary Ann Sexton's widow's pension application based on John Sexton's service. Elizabeth stated that she was born about the year 1772 in Bedford County Virginia and that she was the half-sister of Mary Ann Sexton. She also stated that she lived with John and Mary Sexton 53 years earlier when they lived on New River in Grayson County Virginia. She also stated she was the half-sister of the widow Mary Ann Sexton by her father Daniel Gilbert.
  • In support of the same widow's pension Isaiah Gilbert testified, on July 19, 1844, in Greene County Tennessee, Isaiah Gilbert, 64 on the 9th November

1844, that he was born in Bedford County, Virginia on 9 November 1780. And that he was the half-brother of Mary Ann Sexton both having the same father.

  • Daniel Gilbert Sr was proven to be in Bedford County, Virginia on the birth dates given by Elizabeth Galyear and Isaiah Gilbert. And he is known to have married a second wife after Mary Ann Sexton's birth, but prior to the births of Elizabeth Galyear and Isaiah Gilbert.
  • Isaiah Gilbert first enters the public record in Spartanburg County, South Carolina in 1805, when he witnesses a deed from Daniel Gilbert Sr to Daniel's named son Samuel Gilbert. In 1809, Isaiah witnesses a deed for Daniel Gilbert Sr's probable son Thomas Gilbert.
  • There is no known evidence contradicting the above facts, or in any way indicating that either Mary Ann Sexton, Elizabeth Galyear or Isaiah Gilbert could be the children of anyone other than Daniel Gilbert Sr.
  • Because of the above evidence, we can safely say that Mary Ann Sexton was the daughter Daniel Gilbert Sr. and his first wife Elizabeth (maiden name unknown).
