John Gilbert's death was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1889 in the Croydon district of Surrey aged 87.^[10] He was buried at Coulsdon in Surrey on 11 May 1889^[11] with his abode given as Rose Cottage.^[12]

The following is some information contained in his obituary in the Surrey Mirror:^[13] He was a well known figure in the Croydon market and passed away peacefully on 7 May 1889 aged 87 living in the same house where he had spent most of his life. He came from Wiltshire, and in 1839 became Bailiff to Mr Byron of Coulsdon Court. He was a man of little or no education. His opinion on all matters of farming stood high in the neighbourhood.
