Walter was born in 1853. He was the son of George Gilbert and Rose Pocock. [1]
The cousin of W.G. Grace, he played many first-class matches with his cousin and other members of the Grace family.
Sarah Jane Lillywhite and Walter Raleigh Gilbert married on 20 November 1883 in Downend, Bristol. Walter was a Gentleman as was his father George Mowbray Gilbert (deceased). Sarah Jane lived in Cheltenham her father James (deceased) had been a manufacturer. [2]
He left the country in disgrace having been imprisoned for stealing from team-mates and lived the remainder of his life in Canada.
The couple moved to Canada in 1884 and in 1901 were living with 2 daughters and a variety of others relatives and lodgers in Quebec. Walter was a School Master. [3]
He passed away in 1924.[4], [5] and is buried in Calgary, Alberta, Canada with wife Sarah Jane and daughter Phyllis. [6]

W. R. Gilbert Passes Away
Was One of England's Noted Cricketers in His Youth Walter Raleigh Gilbert, who died in the Holy Cross hospital on Saturday last, after an illness of more than three months, had been a resident of Calgary for over 17 years. For that lengthy of time he had been in the employ of the provincial government in the land titles office at Calgary. Mr. Gilbert contributor to leading American and Canadian magazines and also to The Calgary Herald. Born in London, England, of a well known family, he was practically brought up with his cousins, W. G. and W. F. Grace, and was almost as celebrated as either as a cricketer. He played with both on the Gloucestershire cricket eleven and went to Australia with the All-England eleven. He came to Halifax 35 years ago, where he conducted a private school for a few years. For a few years he conducted a similar school in Montreal. He was for a short time in Medicine Hat, previous to his arrival in this city. His only son, Archie, went overseas with the 12th Mounted Rifles, but he transferred in England to the R.A.F, and was killed on the German front in France. He leaves behind him his widow, and two daughters, Mrs. J. R. Hislop, of New York, and Miss Phyllis, matron of the hospital at Consort.
