Charles Champion Gilbert was born in 1797. He graduated from Yale College in 1817; studied law with his brother-in-law, Massachusetts Rep. Samuel Jones of Stockbridge; then moved to Zanesville, Ohio, and was admitted to the Ohio bar. After practicing law for some years, he was subsequently a cashier at a bank; he married Deborah Silliman, a daughter of Willis Silliman, Esq. and a niece of Gen. Lewis Cass. While multiple records of his death are found in Connecticut, he died at Zanesville in the fall of 1844, and is buried there.
