William John Gilbert was born on the 1st February 1822 in Aghagallon, county Antrim, his parents were Stephen Gilbert and Jane.

He was a partner in the firm of Samuel McCauseland Ltd. in Belfast.

On the 6th August 1851, William John Gilbert married Ellen Orr Killen at Ballyeaston 1st Presbyterian by licence. Marriage transcript[1]names father Stephen Gilbert, farmer. Gives age as 19 and occupation Merchant of Belfast. (Ellen's parents were Edward Killen and Mary Young.)

William John Gilbert died on the 6th of August 1880 in Greenisland; the death registered in Larne registration district, county Antrim.
