Biography

This profile is part of the Gilbert Name Study.

John Gilbert Born in Patrick Co., Virginia (28 Feb 1816- 24 February 1887 in Rich Valley, Smyth, Virginia).

John Gilbert married Jane Fulcher 9 Jan 1838 [1] in Patrick Co., Virginia and appear in the 1860 Census [2] with their children

  1. Nancy A,
  2. John William,
  3. Henry,
  4. Susan E,
  5. James M, and
  6. George W. GILBERT, married[3]HARRIET POSTON, b. 20 Aug 1858, WCV, d. 03 May 1927

After the Civil War, John and Jane moved their family to Smyth County, Virginia, possibly about or after 1867, the year their daughter Nancy Ann married John William Rogers in Patrick County. They appear in the 1870 and 1880 Census in Smyth County.

Y DNA tests have shown that this John Gilbert is not related to the John "Bennett" Gilbert family; DNA tests of descendants of this John Gilbert do not match those of two descendants of John "Bennett" Gilbert through Frederic Gilbert. This test, as well as Autosomal DNA results, do indicate that Pendleton Gilbert is likely John's brother.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Thanks for your messages. Iā€™m returning this record to the original information, restoring Unknown Fulcher as his father, and so on. This John Gilbert is pretty well documented, as are his children and descendants, of which I am direct line. Thanks, David

Hi David and Dan. When I created the profiles for John Gilbert and Sara Cook (of Kanawha) I made a fairly sloppy job of it and I apologize for that. I was on the scent of my 2nd favorite brick-wall ancestor at the time (Louisa Gilbert) and was adding family fairly quickly. I agree with David that these two men do NOT appear to be the same. However, there's a problem with Benjamin Franklin who appears with John and Jane, i. e. Gilbert-16623. He appears to have been born in Roane County, VA, now WV, just north of Kanawha. I believe he has been added to John and Jane in error and should probably be moved with my John and Sara.

Gilbert-10993 and Gilbert-6036 do not represent the same person because: Two totally different people. John Gilbert born in Patrick Co Virginia in 1816, married to Jane Fulcher in 1838. He appears in Smyth Co Census with Jane and children in 1870 and 1880. Dies in 1887 in Smyth Co, buried in Elizabeth Cemetery in Saltville. Never married to anyone but Jane Fulcher, never lived in Kanawha County.

Before marking a parent as 'confirmed with DNA,' please ensure that DNA matching information is included in the profile for at least two testers, including where the DNA was matched, the amount of shared DNA, and the estimated relationships.

'Confirmed with DNA' should not be set before the necessary DNA confirmation statement has been added to the child's profile.

You can see what is required under the DNA Confirmation (click) topic of WikiTree's Help pages.

Thank you.
