@NI207@ NOTE/Burleigh #68. "b. Nov. 10, 1727; m. Cross.">Descendant Nancy L. (French) Dodge, Colebrook, NH researches Burleigh error -"This Hannah Gile [Burleigh #68] is the one who married Stephen Cross, notBurleigh #21 - she married Joseph Whittaker." See father Samuel Guile's will, names Hannah Cross.>Whittaker descendant Ardell J. Parkman Lynds, San Martin CA report confirmswith her own research.
!"Snow - Estes Genealogy" reported by Verna Halpain, El Cajon, CA 3/92 showsbirth 18 Jan 1727, d. 1765, buried Williams Cem Northfield, NH and parentsEbenezer Gile and Mary Johnson.
!Haverhill MA Vital Records to 1850 show b. "Gile", marriage, "Guild".
!Burleigh #68. Hannah Guile, dau. of Samuel Guile (Ephraim, Samuel), Shows b.Nov. 10, 1727; m. Cross." CONFUSION - which Hannah? See #207.Haverhill MA Vital Records to 1850 shows a Hannah Guile m. Joseph Whitticker6 Oct 1741 - there is a Hannah Gile, dau. of Joseph (James, Samuel), b. 29 Aug1729, Burleigh shows no m. Same Hannah was b. 1 Jan 1721, according to Noyes,"Memorial of the Church of Hampstead, NH." If the latter date is correct, thiscould be the one who m. Whitticker. CONSIDER - #68 could have m. another Cross.
!Letter from Whittaker desc. Ardell J. Parkman Lynds, 12630 Joy Bell Ln., SanMartin, CA 85046 19 Oct 1994, shows reasoning for this Hannah m. Whittaker, not Stephen Cross. Stephen m. Hannah dau. of Ebenezer #207, and familychanged accordingly, as she outlined and supports facts above. 12/94 - FGR received on ch. of Joseph Whitaker from Ardell. Shows Hannah d.15 Sep 1781. I had a date of 1787.
!I sent Lynds letter to Vera Halpain to see about the confusion and she replied"Yes, Hannah was dau. of Ebenezer and Mary, she was b. 18 Jan 1721 inHaverhill. The Hannah who m. Clough was dau. of Samuel, who was Ebenezer'sgrandfather. I have never seen an Emerson connected to the Guilds. Those oldrecords are very confusing to say the least. Anyway, I'm satisfied with whatI have."
!17 Oct. 1995 - letter from Nancy L. (French) Dodge, RR2, Box 191, Colebrook, NH03576 - in response to my letter, referred by Mary Woodman of VermontGenealogical Society as having Gile in her ancestry - "I suspect the info GSV has on my Gile/Guild connection is incorrect. Iassume you have the Burleigh volume in hand. If you look at p. 224, you willsee a Hannah Guile b. 18 Jan 1720/21 (Ebenezer-3, James-2, Samuel-1) supposedlymarried to Stephen Cross. Stephen Cross is my ancestor s- but that's NOT theHannah Guile he married. That Hannah m. 6 Oct. 1741 Joseph Whittaker, and shewas "of Ipswich" at the time, as she had been under the guardianship of SamuelPorter (?Parker?Potter) since 1736/37, her father Ebenezer having died Mar.1721/2 when she was an infant. Joseph and Hannah (Guile) Whittaker named theirfirst son Ebenezer. Note that on p. 226, there is another Hannah-4, b. 10 Nov. 1747 (Samuel-3,Ephraim-2, Samuel-1) who is also listed as married to a Cross. SHE was marriedto my Stephen as his first wife. Hannah d. 1765, and Stephen m. later thatyear Hannah Marsh. Stephen and Hannah (Guile) Cross had Hannah 1747, Stephen1749, Sarah 1751, Anne (twin to Sarah), Jesse 1754, Parker 1756, Thomas 1757,Elizabeth 1759, Moses 1761 (or 1763?), Mary 1762, and John 1764. Jesse had 12children, and no hint of a wife anywhere, much to my frustration! Also on p. 226, there is an excerpt from the Essex Probate Docket #10907 forSamuel Guile, in which he mentions the heirs of Hannah Cross, deceased - whichshe indeed was. I suspect the lineage GSV has for me goes back from thewrong Hannah Guile, as I sent the info in long before I knew any better.long-in-print errors are hard to kill, so I'm always thrilled to see revisionshappening. Briefly my descent from Hannah-4 Guile and Stephen Cross: Jesse Cross (and no wife) William Cross and Ruth Kenniston Ruth Ann Cross and Edmund K. Young Martha Ann Young and Frank Lewis Owen Addie Ruth Owen and Ray William French Owen Leroy French and Hilda Estella Spencer Nancy Linda French b. 28 Aug. 1943 Laconia, NH."
!"Snow - Estes Genealogy" reported by Verna Halpain, El Cajon, CA 3/92 showsbirth 18 Jan 1727, d. 1765, buried Williams Cem Northfield, NH and parentsEbenezer Gile and Mary Johnson. See above for change, this Hannah d. 1787.Leaving this here for ref., this applies to #207.
!Nancy L. Dodge, Colebrook NH 10/30/95 - says "Williams Cemetery" info is fromNorthfield history "it is said they are in the Williams Cemtery" - hasn't beenable to verify.
!Probate Index of Essex Co. lists a Hannah Gile Probate #10902, 17 May 1736,Haverhill, Minor. /Burleigh #21 - "m. Jul 3, 1746 Stephen Cross of Haverhill. Had seven ch.">Whittaker descendant Ardell J. Parkman Lynds, San Martin CA reports Burleigherror on #21, also reported the error on #68. Burleigh had #21 m. StephenCross and #68 m. ___Cross. Ardell Lynds reported that Hannah Gile #21,m. Oct. 1741 Joseph Whittaker, and she was "of Ipswich" at the time, as shehad been under the guardianship of Samuel Porter (?Parker?Potter) since 1736/37,her her father, Ebenezer, having died Mar. 1721/2 when she was an infant.Joseph and Hannah (Guile) Whittaker named their first son Ebenezer."Her estate administered to her son James in 1782 per Essex Institute records."> Nancy L. (French) Dodge, Colebrook, NH, descendant of Stephen Cross, saysthat #68 "is the one who actually married Stephen Cross as his first wife.Hannah d. 1765 and Stephen married later that year Hannah Marsh...Essex Co.Probate Docket #10907 for Samuel Guile mentions heirs of Hannah Cross, deceased."
