  • This person was created through the import of JohnAncestors.ged on 07 October 2010.
  • Called "Bob" by the family, Joseph in 1900 homesteaded in Money Creek, Houston Co. MN where they lived in a rustic log cabin on his farm. His first wife Laura, died in 1907 during the birth of their twin daughters and he moved to Winona City. He had difficulty maintaining his family and the children were placed in the State School for a while. He soon reunited with the sons, but the daughter had been placed permanently with a farm family, much to the dismay and distress of the rest of the family, grandparents and relatives who tried to get her release and care for her.
  • Letter from Granddaughter, Carol Mahler, 3 Oct 1989, states he was living with his daughter Vera at the time of his death at the age of 72 years, 4 months. This letter is source of death date - dispute on birth date - she says 10 Apr 1856. Also dispute on marriage date - Marriage license Index says April 4,1894, Carol says April 10, 1893. I believe April 10, 1894 was date of marriage, April 4 the license.
  • Letter from Hugh Swofford reporting conversation with his grandmother about Minnie (Gile) Ostrom. - Part says "The Giles carried a tendancy to be fat and Minnie Ostrom and Joseph L. Gile were the fat ones."
  • Letter from Hugh Swofford reporting reminisces from Marjorie Swofford about Buchholtz - "Mr. Buchholtz was the father of Mary (Buchholtz) Gile. She was the wife of Joseph L. Gile. He had red whiskers around his face from ear to ear. He lived in Money Creek in Minnesota. (Buckholtz could be Boynton?) Once each month he made a trip to Winona for supplies. He must have talked to my great grandmother about it before because my grandmother remembers knowing she was going to go out to Money Creek and longing to go. The trip occurred c. 1898. My grandmother and her mother sat atop the springseat of his lumber wagon. She recalls the trip over the narrow winding dirt road that went down into valleys and up over steep hills. It took all day to get there. Joseph L. Gile lived in a log cabin in Money Creek's wilderness. It had one big room downstairs and an upper loft. The floor was dirt. There was a deep gorge about 15 feet to one side of the cabin. Close to the edge there was a tree with a good limb for the swing. When swinging on it the swinger would go over the gorge. The kids jumped in and out of the cabin like rabbits. In Money Creek Joseph L. Gile made my grandmother a corn cob doll. She didn't like the doll so she threw it behind the ladder to the loft. A rattlesnake was laying on the logs where some chinking had come out and Joseph L. Gile shot it. My grandmother does not remember how long they stayed in Money Creek but she remembers staying overnight with patched quilts over them."
