They now reside at PortlandOregon.">Excerpts from Food Marketing in New England, Jan. 1955 - "In 1849, Henry Gile was working in Portland (Maine) when the storiesflew East of the fortunes to be made in California. He and a group of otheryoung men got together, bought a ship and sailed around Cape Horn, arriving inCalifornia in December 1849. Henry Gile went to Portland, Oregon in 1851 andin 1853 went to Chinook, Washington which is on the north side of the ColumbiaRiver near the mouth, and went into the oyster business...In 1851, SanFrancisco was booming and the delicious oysters made a hit. They brought anaverage a dollar a basket alongside the vessel. When about 50,000 baskets wereshipped each year and were paid for in gold on the spot, there were quite a lotof $20 gold pieces distributed! At that time, there was probably more gold percapita in Oysterville than in any city in the West." The Spring 1968 issue of "The Sou'wester" pub. by The Pacific CountyHistorical Society (WA) features a photo of "H. S. Gile - Pioneer Surveyor" onthe cover, and the issue is about him and his son Albion. Gile was elected tostate legislature in 1856, and in 1858 contracted with the government to surveya substantial part of the county, so settlers could officially establish titleto their land claims. In 1995 this book's author, John Gile, toured Oysterville and area, visitedthe Chinook fish packing plant, and supplied data to the local museum.

 !1900 census Portland, Multnomah, OR age 73, b. ME, with family, 1 boarder,and 1 servant.
