He is most likely the Ruben Giles whose birth was registered in Eton in the third quarter of 1838.[1] However there is no mother's maiden name listed with that record - which would normally indicate the mother was unmarried, whereas Reuben's parents married in 1827 and his sibling's births were all registered with mother's maiden name Gurney. There may have been an error in the transcription of the record, or perhaps there was a Ruben Giles born around the same time and Reuben Richard Giles' birth was simply not registered.
Reuben Richard Giles, son of Henry & Mary, was christened on 15 Jul 1838 in Eton.[2]
In 1841 Ruben Giles (age 3) lived at Eton Wick in Eton with his father Henry (40-44), mother Mary (30-34), sister Mary (13), and brother David (1).[3]
In 1851 Reuben Giles (age 12, Farm Labourer) lived in Eton with his father Henry (49, Farm Labourer), mother Mary (33[~43], Sheppard) and four siblings: Mary (24, At Home), David (10, Sheppard), Alfred (5, Scholar), and George (3, At Home).[4]
Reuben Richard Giles (age 20) married Sophia Ann Cannon (age 17) on 8 May 1859 in Eton.[5] The marriage was registered in Eton in the second quarter of the year.[6]
In 1861 Reuben Richd 'Piler' [Giles] (age 23, Carter) lived at Eton Wick Common in Eton with his wife Sophia Ann (19, Laundress), mother-in-law Sophia Cannon (54, Market Gardener), and brother-in-law Charles Cannon (16, Milkman).[7]
In 1871 Reuben Giles (age 32, Labourer) lived in Eton with his wife Sophia Ann (26) and five children: Mary Ann (9, Scholar), Sophia Alice (6, Scholar), Eliza (4, Scholar), Walter Reuben (3), and Emily Rosa (0), as well as his father-in-law Charles Cannon (61, Labourer).[8]
In 1881 Reuben Giles (age 42, General Labourer) lived at Little Common in Eton with his wife Sophia A (36, Laundress) and three children: Eliza (14, Scholar), Walter K (13, Scholar), and Emmeline (5).[9]
In 1891 Reuben R Giles (age 53, Carman) lived at Albert Place in Eton with his wife Sophia A (46, Laundress) and two daughters: Emmeline A (15, Domestic Servant) and Florence M (5, Scholar), as well as grandson Walter Ford (4, Scholar).[10]
In 1901 Reuben R Giles (age 62, Cowman) lived in Eton with his wife Sophia A (56, Laundress), daughter Florence M (15, General Servant Domestic), and granddaughter Rosa E D Giles (3).[11]
Reuben Richard Giles passed away in 1910, aged 71 years. His death was registered in Eton in the second quarter of the year.[12]
