Biography

Mary Ann appears on the 1851 Census on the Island of Jersey, when the family returned to Cornwall she was found in the 1861 Census as working as a 'Dairy Maid' aged 17, same household as her half brother Philip aged 11. William & Judith Francoise Giles [Alias "Fanny"] were recorded as having a another child 'Joseph' [died as infant] in Cornwall {see 1861 Census] prior to leaving Cornwall for Australia in 1864. [Philip sailed to Australia with his two brothers, Samuel A. & Peter F. T. Giles and his parents].

William had taken Mary Ann to Jersey as a 3 to 4 year old child. She appears on the 1851 Census for Jersey. Her Step- mother's child, Rosalie Hortense Justine Menage was a similar age.
