John Giles was born in "Salem Village" (now North Danvers), Massachusetts, on January 28, 1695-6, the son of John and Abigail (Raymond) Giles.[1][2]
He married first, Susanna Hall, of Medford, Massachusetts, daughter of Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Cutter) Hall, in Medford on March 27, 1718. She died in Medford May 21, 1754.[1][3]
He married second, Lydia Atwood of Woburn, Massachusetts, in Woburn on November 25, 1756. John Vinton in The Giles Memorial says she "was probably the widow of John Atwood." There is some controversy in the source record over whether Lydia Atwood was the widow of John Atwood, or his daughter. See the profile of Lydia Atwood for a more comprehensive discussion.[1][4][5]
Like his father, John was a "cordwainer;" though, like him also, an owner and cultivator of the soil. He lived in Medford from the time of his first marriage, 1718, until a little while before his father's death in 1731, when he returned to "Salem Village," where he resided till the sale of his property in 1746. He then seems to have returned to Medford, where he resided, at least till his second marriage, in 1756. His last days appear to have been spent in Woburn.[1]
John Giles died in Woburn on January 20, 1761, "in ye 70th Year of his Age" (gravestone). He is buried in the First Burial Ground in Woburn, where his gravestone reads:[1][6][7][8]
