Disclaimer

To avoid confusion it should also be noted by family researchers there were two women named Sarah who married two different men named George W. Barber and who resided in close proximity in northeastern Kentucky during the same time frame. Both of the George Barbers were born in Kentucky, one in 1853 and the other in 1855. Both had a wife named Sarah. George born 1855 in Greenup County, Kentucky, lived in Lawrence County, Ohio.[1], and his wife was Sarah Gilkey. The other George Barber, born 1853, resided in Bath and Fleming County, Kentucky. He used the name G.W. Barber and George William Barber. His wife was Sarah M. Davis. We know they are not the same persons because George William Barber and his wife Sarah were alive in 1910 and residing in Bath County, Kentucky and they were still living there in 1920. [2] [3] Meanwhile, George Barber, born 1855, died and was buried in Greenup County, Kentucky 1908.[4] US Census records show his widow in 1910 was head of household, owning her own farm and residing at East Fork Creek with four of her sons in Greenup County, Kentucky:

Sarah Barber 54 Farmer, general farming
John Barber 26 Farm laborer, home farm
Orville Barber 23 Switchman on railroad
Albert Barber 16 Farm laborer, home farm
Libbie Barber 11 Farm laborer, home farm

Further proof is found in the 1920 census. Sarah Barber was age 62, born KY and resided in the home of her son Lib Barber on the Chinnville to Russell Road.[5] Finally Sarrah Barber, age 74, born KY, was listed as a widow in the 1930 census of Greenup County, Kentucky and living with her son Orville and his family. [6]

It is hoped these census records provide sufficient proof for future researchers to avoid the pitfall of mistakenly combining two entirely different families.

Birth

We first document Sarah when she was listed as age 5, born Kentucky, and living in the household of her parents William and Ellen Guilky in the 1860 census for Greenup County, Kentucky.[7]

LIfe

Sarah grew up along the Little Sandy River where her father had owned a farm but had sold it by the time she was born. It is not clear what her father's occupation was but nearby were Gilkey and Williams relatives who owned a hotel and store in the town then known as Greenupsburg (later Greenup) Kentucky and it appears William Gilkey was probably involved in business with his brother Charles Gilkey. William Gilkey's name is not carried on the Greenup County tax lists from 1854 to 1859 and where he and his family resided is not known.

By 1860 William Gilkey had returned to Greenup County and tax and census records place his home along Little Sandy River.[8] His family according the the 1860 census included: William Guilky age 53 living in Greenup County, Kentucky with his second wife Ellen Guilky, age 37, and their children Sarah, age 5, and Francis M. age 2. [9]

At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 William Gilkey joined the Union Army but returned home ill to Greenup County in 1862 and remained there until the end of the war in 1864. [10] [11] [12]

After the war William Gilkey went to Indiana in 1866 where he remained briefly with his brother John Gilkey in Hamilton County.[13] It may have been at this time that he divorced or was separated from his second wife because Eleanor Guilkey was head of household and her three children (Sarah, Francis M, and Margaret) were living with her in Greenupsburg (now the town of Greenup) in Greenup County, Kentucky in the 1870 census. [14] The separation of Sarah's parents continued in 1880 as shown by the census. William Guilkey, age 72, was living with his brother Charles S. Guilkey in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky. His marital status was listed as "single".[15] While Sarah's mother, Eleanor was listed in the 1880 census as Eleanor Gilky, age 60, born Ohio. Her marital status was "widowed" and she was head of her own household in Greenup County, Kentucky.[16] During this time Sarah had been working as a maid for a family in Ashland, Kentucky and it was there she met the young man she would eventually marry.[17]

Marriage

Sarah Gilkey was 19 when she and George W. Barber were married on 3 December 1874 in Lawrence County, Ohio. [18] The young couple were enumerated in the 1880 census living on a farm in Upper Twp., Lawrence County, Ohio. Sarah Barber, age 24, born Kentucky, was listed as "wife" in the household of George Barber.[19]

Family

Sarah and George Barber had eleven children: Frank; Bertha Ann "Bertie"; William Henry; John Leslie; George Washington; Sammie; Orville; Sarah; Lettie Mae; Albert; and Libbie. After George's death the family relocated from Ohio to Greenup County, Kentucky.

Death

Sarah Barber died 31 August 1933 in Greenup County, Kentucky. Her parents are listed on her death certificate as William Gilkey and Mary Williams and Sarah's birthdate was recorded as 7 March 1856 in Greenup County, Kentucky. She was buried beside her husband in the Caroline Cemetery.[20]
