Biography

Surname

The surname was originally spelled Gilkey but after settling in Greenup County, Kentucky the family patriarch, Edward Gilkey, adopted the use of the spelling Guilkey. Many of his descendants continued using the Guilkey spelling variation although in the twentieth century the family returned to the original Gilkey spelling.

Birth

John Gilkey was born 30 October 1804 in Greenup County, Kentucky. [1][2]

Marriage

John Gilkey married Margaret Gee, 10 April 1829, Greenup County, Kentucky. Bondsman was Champness Gee. Consent of Robert Gee, her father. Margaret was the daughter of Robert Gee and Elizabeth Waters. [3][4]

John Guilkey married second, Sarah Stoops, 20 May 1834, Hamilton County, Indiana. [5]

Residence

He moved to Hamilton Co., IN by 10 Feb 1838, when John Guilkey is recorded purchasing a bed spread and axe at the estate sale of Sarah Murphy. [6]

7 May 1845 Deed from John Guilkey "of the county of Hamilton and state of Indiana...sells to John Holbrook of the County of Greenup and State of Kentucky...all right, title, claim and interest which the said John Guilkey has in any or all the land and premises of which Edward Guilkey late of the County of Greenup & State of Kentucky deceased died seized and possessed..." signed John Guilkey Sarah (her X mark) Guilkey. [7]

Owned a farm near Noblesville, Indiana. John Guilkey obtained a land patent for 40 acres in Section 33 on 20 May 1835. The grant was signed by Andrew Jackson. He took out a second land grant for 40 acres adjoining his earlier patent, on 15 March 1837. That patent was signed by Martin Van Buren. [8]

He was listed as John Gilchie in the 1850 census for Wayne Township, Hamilton County, Indiana. [9]

Death

John Guilkey died 1866 in Hamilton County, Indiana and was buried in the Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery, next to his wife Sarah. [10][11]
