Harriet came to NZ in 1851 with her mother and stepfather and siblings (the MAULE family). A letter from Mrs Elisabeth HODGSON stated that an error was made when the name MAULE was used on Harriet's death certificate, and that the family had persuaded the Registrar-General to alter it back to the correct name (presumably Harriet Ann GILL).[3]

The death of Mrs William Hodgson, which occurred at Spring Grove, Nelson, last week, removes another of the now small band of early settlers. She was born in Wiltshire, and came with her parents to New South Wales. The family remained there a year and then came to Nelson 73 years ago. They first settled at Stoke, but eventually removed to Spring Grove, where the deceased spent the remainder of her life. She married the late Mr Willian Hodgson in 1857, and leaves a family of five sons and one daughter (Messrs William, Abraham and Samuel Hodgson, all of Marlborough, Frederick, Auckland, George, Spring Grove, and Miss Hodgson, Spring Grove.
