"William Gillespie of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, belonged to the 1st class troops. He served in the 1st Company, 2d Battalion, 1780, under Captain William Moore and Lieutenant Seebright. He was a member of Cumberland County militia. He is listed among the roll of soldiers from Cumberland County, 2d Battlion, 8th Company, under Captain Matthew Gregg, is listed for service under Captain James Douglass, July, 1778, in service during second call 1778 in 2d Batt., and shows as a Private on Captain James Irving's payroll of 1780."[1]
