Biography

Jackson was born on May 6, 1813. He was the son of Robert Gillespie and Sarah Aken. He passed away on May 1, 1894. The following ia a transcript of his obituary. [1]

Jackson Gillespie's Obituary Some weeks ago occurred the decease of Mr. Jackson Gillespie, one of Transylvania's most respected pioneer citizens, and universal regret seized the hearts of his aged comrades who had associated with him in the long ago, when the broad fields which now adorn these beautiful and fertile valleys were covered with dense forests and were alive with both timid and ferocious denizens from which the early settler drew their limited supplies. Young people too, mourn the loss of this patriotic father and join in sympathy with the relatives and friends of the deceased. Mr. Gillespie had been a great sufferer for several years, being subject to frequent attacks of indigestion, and his death was doubtless a happy event to him - being fully assured of a triumphant entrance into the eternal city whose inhabitants experience neither suffering nor death. The subject of this sketch was born May 6, 1813, and died May 1, 1894, being within a few days of 81 years old. He was married to Miss Mary S. Porter, of South Carolina, Nov. 6, 1834, sixty years ago. Thirteen children - ten boys and three girls - have resulted from their union. Six sons and two daughters are still living to mourn his loss, and a more respectable family is seldom met with. Every member is prominent in society in the communities where they reside, and some occupy positions of honor in remote sections of the country. They are separated now but when the final end has fully come may all be prepared to meet father on the banks of "sweet deliverance."
