His middle name may have been "Jackson" (he had an uncle with that name).

He is listed as age 1 in the 1850 US federal census for Henrico Co. VA in the household of Geo. W. Gilespie.^[1]

He is listed as age 11 in the 1860 US federal census for Albemarle Co. VA in the household of Jane E Gillespie.^[2]

He married Alice Woodward in Staunton, VA on 4 Nov 1875^[3]; the marriage registry gives his birth as 1851 (age 24 in Nov 1875) but he also appears in the 1850 census as age 1, so the marriage register is assumed to be wrong on this point.
